Reports in cruising news put out by Munday travel of London indicate that Seabourn Sun is to be renamed Prinsendam when she joins the HAL fleet and that part of the dining room will be turned into additional cabins thus presumably ending single seating dining. In view of what happened to the last Prinsendam the choice of name is odd to say the least.

PeterUK - I am very, very surprised at this as I have always been told that another ship would NOT be named Prinsendam. I must ask my source at HAL if this is true.
Have just read an article in John-Maxtone Graham's book Liners to the Sun, about the sinking of the Prinsendam. It really is a miracle that there was no loss of life. I do know Dick Zeller, who was the HM on the ship - don't ever remember him mentioning this to us in all the years we sailed with him.

It seems very strange to me that they are going to name another ship Prinsendam, also because they have still other names to be used, like Potsdam and Leerdam. HAL is always placing pictures of the former vessels in the passenger staircases; I'm wondering if they are going to place the one with the Prinsendam adrift and listing after she's been abandoned.

Hi Ryndam - that's a good question. Wouldn't that put the passengers at ease!

I would wonder if the original source of the information came out on April 1. There have been a lot of such April Fools stories this year.

I am going to try to locate a copy of that book that was mentioned. I remember when the ship caught fire. As I recall it was about 300 miles out in the gulf of Alaska and took to the life boats at night. It later sank while under tow to Vancouver.

Does anybody have any confirmation of this news or was it an April fool?

I have heard from a Travel Agent in Alberta that this choice of name has been confirmed to them by their HAL Sales Manager. I cannot find anything official but I couldn't imagine an employee confirming such a thing were it not true.

I agree - it is not the best choice of names - at all!

Prinsendam would be a great name for this ship. Its design, though small, was the prototype for all of the new breed of cruise ships and although she met with an ignominious end, the truth is that this is why we have life boat drills and SOLAS regulations and it is a tribute to HAL (which always took this very seriously,) that all the passengers and crew were rescued. The ship capsized because, like the Normandie before her, she was flooded with water and became top-heavy; no doubt she otherwise could have been refitted.

Did Prinsendam have a sister....I don't recall??? I still have news paper and magazine articles about the burning and sinking of the Prinsendam. I am also a bit taken back that HAL would use this name. That's like Costa renaming the Tropicale, "Andrea Doria". However, I will say that the Prinsendam event never really became as legendary or well known as the Andrea Doria, or the Titanic of course. The new generation of cruise passengers may not know or remember the Prinsendam sinking.

I would have selected a different name, or even made up new dam name.

How about Seadam, or what about the Hooverdam? It would be fitting for HAL to name a ship after an American dam since most passengers are from the states.

No, Prinsendam never had a twin. There was
talk of building several similar vessels, but
it never came to pass. I, too, find it more
than strange that HAL is to reuse the name.
I guess someone feels all present day pax
began cruising after 1987 or whatever year
Prinsendam sank. Sorry Barryboat, I dislike
Hooverdam and Seadam. There are still many
HAL names that could be used.

I agree with NAL about the names , HAL uses dutch names , like Nieuw Amsterdam , Zaandam , Volendam , Prinsendam , Ryndam , ... I think it should be something like Nederdam or Vuurdam
