Hi Joe/All

Can anyone share any first hand knowledge of what the Monarch is like now. My family is sailing on it on June 17th, 2001. I heard it was refurbished recently, but didn't see that information documented here at Travelpage.
Anyone else going on the same sailing?

Hi Idamae
yes the ship was refurbished in 1999.
we we,re on deck 6 the staterooms are small,at least ours was, but there is a lot of storage space. big closet and a lot of shelves.I recemend taking a shore exursion for snorkeling on st. thomas. you can take a catamaran and snorkel tour. or take the st. john beach tour where you can swim and snorkel at trunk bay, here you will be in shallow water, rather than out in deep waters.
and i hear trunk bay is a graet place to snorkel.

The Monarch has a special place in my heart since this was the first cruise we had ever taken. Since then we have cruised it one other time. It doesn't have enough elevators or hot tubs, like the newer ships, but it's a great cruise, great itinerary.

**We didn't like Trunk Bay. Too busy and the lifeguards blow their whistles every 5 minutes. Too many rules for a beach. You cannot even throw a ball or frisbie for crying out loud.

Hello Idamae3218,

We were on the Monarch in February and loved it. Overall this was one of my favorite cruises. The itinerary was wonderful. I loved the Ship too, although cabins are quite small. We loved going to the Viking Crown before dinner during happy hour to relax and talk about our day (there were 14 of us traveling together).

I think St.Thomas is a great place to snorkel. I prefer the "walk off the beach" as opposed to "jump off a boat" entrance to the water since I am not a swimmer. I have been to Trunk Bay before but much preferred the side trip we did on our own. Take a taxi and go to Coki Beach. The snorkeling was the best! We went early in the morning and there weren't many people there. Even as we left several hours later, the beach was not crowded. It was amazing how many fish we saw. I would rank this as the best snorkeling we ever did.

Have a wonderful trip! If you have any questions, you can certainly email me.

We were on the Monarch of the Seas this past New Years (2001) and have another cruise set up for this fall. The condition of the ship was immaculate and it is indeed a very elagant ship in its interior appointments. I don't know when it was last "refurbished" but it certainly did not look like a 10 year old ship. If you would like some pictures of the Monarch let me know and I can email some of the pictures from the New years cruise. Hope this helps.
