Some of these may be a little obscure, so bear with me....

1.) Sitmar ships. Does anyone have any pictures of any of their ships?

2.) Westerdam before the stretching. Any pictures of her in HAL colours before she was lengthened?

3.) Statendam IV. Any picture would be fine.

The gorgeous looking STATENDAM IV. She's seen here with the final HAL livery before being sold.

Great pictures fellas. I spent a day on the Statendam IV when the Volendam was 12 hours late arriving in Miami on our first cruise.
Was on the Westerdam in '88 when HAL bought her and again in '90 after stretch. Took her over to Germany for stretch in '89. I am going to save these pictures and use them at on my desktop as wallpaper.
Thanks.

Thanks for the pictures all. Just another quick question however. When did HAL change to the white funnel that they have now?

They changed the stacks in 1983 with the introduction of the Nieuw Amsterdam. I read that they tried the Orange stack on models of the N.A., but it looked to heavy on the ship, so they changed to white instead. A few years later, they changed from the three waves to the N.A.(1938) symbol they still have today.

Here are the pics of the sitmar ships.

Fairwind & Fairsea

Fairsky (later Sky Princess, now Pacific Sky)

Here is a rare early artist rendering of the FairMajesty which was delivered after Sitmar was purchased by P&O as the Star Princess. Today she is the Arcadia for P&O Cruises.

This is the Fairstar that served the Australian cruise market for many years. She retained her name after the purchase by P&O.

I am a huge fan of the former Sitmar Cruises. My very first cruise was aboard Fairwind in 1981, and I went on to sail twice on the Fairsky and once more on Fairwind before the line was purchased in 1988. At the time Sitmar was building 3 new ships (later delivered as Star Princess, Regal Princess, and Crown Princess) that would have secured the line's future. But after the owner, Boris Vlasov died (his name explains the V on the funnels) his family chose to sell the line and focus on other shipping areas. Today the company is known as V.Ships and they are back in the cruise business. They manage Silversea Cruises and parts of Radisson Seven Seas Cruises.

Sitmar was the best cruise line I have ever sailed- no doubt.

By the way, shortly before being sold Sitmar had changed its look and livery. The new symbol- an S shaped swan resting on three waves was going to replace the V on the funnels. And three waves (one red and two blue) were to be painted on the hulls of the ships- here is what the fleet would have looked like:

Here's a pic of the Oslofjord, an earlier Norwegian America Line ship. The Vistafjord had the same colours.

I believe Fairstar was built in Scotland in 1954 as the Oxfordshire (a british troop transport ship). She was sold to Sitmar in the early 60's and converted for Europe-Australia immigrant service that was the foundation of the Sitmar Line. After Sitmar lost their contract with the Australian government to Chandris Line (the greek shipping company that later started Celebrity Cruises) Sitmar moved more into the vacation cruise segement. They started Sitmar Crusies in north america with the Fairsea and Fairwind (both ex-cunard ships rebuilt in Italy for Sitmar) and Fairstar was converted into a cruise ship and was based in Sydney- becoming a very popular and beloved ship in the australian cruise market. She was purchased, along with Sitmar Cruises' north american brand, by P&O in 1988. Sitmar's other cruise ships were incorporated into Princess Cruises- but Fairstar kept her name and still sailed the south pacific from Sydney. After many years in service her age was showing, and some mechanical problems developed. P&O finally removed her from service in 1997 when she was replaced by Fair Princess (former Fairsea). Fairstar was sent to the scrapers. Today the former Fairsky sails in her place out of Sydney as the Pacific Sky.

Jekyll,

To post a picture the picture first needs to be on a server connected to the internet and support a link from another server. That being the case....

Adding Images
To add a graphic within your message, just encase the URL of the graphic image as shown in the following example - there are no spaces between the [IMG] tag and the URL.

[IMG] http://www.yourwebserver.com/images/ship.gif [/IMG]
In the example above, the UBB Code automatically makes the graphic visible in your message. Note: the "http://" part of the URL is REQUIRED for the [img] code.

Here's the link if you want to bookmark it for future references http://www.travelserver.net/travelpage/ubb/ubbcode.html

Finally I hear of another huge Sitmar Fan! I too sailed the Fairwind in 1981, the Fairsea in 1974, 1982,and 1984 and the Fairsky in 1985. That was a brand new ship when I was on it and it seems like yesterday. I can't believe when people talk about it being an old ship! Anyway was very sad when they sold out to Princess. Had some great times aboard those Sitmar ships!

Sailmom,

Nice to find another sitmar loyalist. I sailed on the Fairsky during her inaugural 1984 Alaska season (14 days from San Francisco) and again in 1985 to Mexico from L.A. She was, and is, a great ship- but it was the sitmar service and class that made the line so great.

I often wonder what would have happened if Princess did not buyout Sitmar. It is interesting to note that the Princess fleet today is largely designed by the staff that worked on Sitmar's newer ships. One can trace the design philosophy back to the FairMajesty (Star Princess) which was an updated version of the Fairsky. So, P&O Princess owe their current success largely to the philosophy and people of Sitmar!

That's true. You can't beat the service of Sitmar. We were just your average joe family so it always amazed us when the crew would recognize us from one year to the next.
