"WHERE there's smoke there's fire - except on the aptly named 25,000-tonne Nassau-registered tub the Albatros, which decided to contribute to the Sydney atmosphere before upping anchor and leaving our shores. The hapless passengers cruising on the ship - a visitor to Sydney each summer - faced choking black smoke belching from the ship's funnel on Friday afternoon as decades of accumulated diesel residue erupted after a power failure in the engine room. Two Enviroment Protection Authority officers interviewed the ship's captain. The EPA could impose a $1,500 penalty infringement notice or procecute the ship's owners. The EPA has the power to fine the Albatros up to $250,000 for polluting out city. The ship was built in the 1950s and refurbished in 1993. It's rated 3.5 stars - or it was, until Friday."

A similar thing happened in Nov. '81 while I was on the old Volendam in Curacao. We were just leaving the port, under the Queen Wilhelma bridge, when all of a sudden the anchors were dropped and all this thick black smoke came pouring out. It went up over the bridge, causing some accidents, I believe, and spewing it's dirt over passengers on the deck, lounges and decks. What a mess. At the time we had a crew on board retubing the boilers, but heard, whether it was true or not, that it was all the accumulated soot in the stacks and a bad mixture of oil & gasoline. Believe HAL was fined $5,000. by the Curacao Gov't.

On a steamship,malfunction of the forced draft blower will cause massive amounts of black smoke.Fuel/air ratio is critical and
any slight inbalance willcause this. no gasoline aboard ship burnes #6 oil or
i.f.o.380. the retubing is not a factor.
accumulated soot would have been expelled when ship is at sea at night by a process called "blowing Tubes,done in the wee hours of the morning when there are no passengers wandering about the decks. regards norman
