I have been on Carnival and am not going back.

Wanted something more intimate and quiet this time. I hear R/C is popular for this. I was interested in going to St. Thomas and several days at sea. Enchantment and Explorer of the Seas hit these targets.

Do both of these have a 24hr cafe (carnival did), where you can get complimentary snacks... ice cream, pizza, etc?

Also, do either of these ships stack and lock the chairs outside at night? I hear people are going on cruises and can't sit outside at night because all the chairs have been locked up.

Is there such a thing as "kids opt out"?

And please... would love to hear negatives as well as positives!

Thanks

I've been on both. Both EXCELLENT ships. Food available at all times, including 24 hr room service.

Don't recall if seats are available in the evening.

Which ship depends on what your looking for. If you are fairly active, I would go with Explorer. You will not go wrong with either choice.

One annoying thing on Explorer was that it is so large that many people bring walkie talkies with them which make loud annoying noises when you try to relax. I would imagine that these are popular on other ships as well however. Awesome ship!

Woohoo... I FINALLY got a reply! Thank you!

Sorry, but need to confirm... do you mean that the food available in the 24 hr cafe is complimentary?

Sounds like Enchantment will be the ship. How annoying to get walkie talkies, surprised at that one.

Any sites you can recommend for good cruise rates?

thank you for responding.

We have been on both. Really loved Explorer. We are still talking about how beautiful it is. Food is available pretty much around the clock on Explorer. My wife seemed to enjoy a small shop that had sandwiches, pizza, dessert and other goodies. Only one midnight buffet. Most of the R.C. ships and others have cut out the buffets. They have servers wander-around at night in the clubs an have trays with snacks. I guess we were lucky. We didn't have any problems with the two way radios. I know many people have their own favorite spot. We like the solarium (back off in a corner), we love the therpy pool in the work out room. To really get private try one of the lower walking decks. You don't get much traffic out their. Of course some of the clubs have nice quiet spots. I hope this will help you out. As you can see I talked mostly about explorer but still liked Enchantment. Though it was not nearly as pretty as the Grandeur. I would say the decor was run of the mill. We have been on most of the other R.C. ships. We are 60+ young and as you can see we still are active and like do the fun stuff.

Do you know when you want to go? We're booked on the Enchantment in February, so I'm really interested to hear how it goes if you sail before me. We're sailing Feb. 18th. (If we sail before you, I'll give you more info when we get back.) And feel free to ask any other questions.

We sailed on Voyager last year (sister ship of the Explorer) and it was our best cruise EVER. It didn't seem too crowded to us at all. And the walkie talkies didn't bother us at all either.

On the Voyager, they had the frozen yogurt self serve open 24 hours a day, and I'm pretty sure the little restaurant on the Royal Promonade was open 24 hours also. (All free.) They had pizza (very good!) and pastries, cookies, sandwiches, etc... too. Believe me, you WILL NEVER go hungry. And you can always order room service any time too. Also free.

We absolutely LOOOOVE Royal Caribbean. It's by far our favorite. I don't think I will ever book with Carnival either. From everything I've heard, its just not the line for us. We're not partiers, and are usually in bed by 11 at the latest! (Princess was too stuffy for us, and HAL was great, but being in our late 20s,we were the youngest people on board. So RCCL is juuuust right.) We found everything to be just our style. That's why there's something for everyone's taste!

We knew RCCL was the only line we wanted to consider, and booked the Enchantment specifically for the itinerary. (I don't get excited about either San Juan or Labadee, which is mainly why we didn't choose Explorer.) Like you, we really wanted to stop in St. Thomas again, too, and we especially like extra at sea days.

Maybe one of the reasons they have to lock the chairs up at night is that (as you probably already read on this forum from a recent incident)some people might have too much to drink late at night and might think it's funny to throw the chairs overboard! Of course, this could be very costly for the cruise line and harmful environmentally. And the ships do tend to go faster at night, so maybe they're afraid if the chairs are not secured, they might cause damage if not secured or even fall overboard! I'm just guessing here, so don't take any of this as truth, of course!

For more information, you should also do a "search" on this website on both Enchantment and Explorer because there have already been lots of comments about both. And definitely read all the reviews. (In addition to this site, if you want to read more, there are tons of sites that have reviews...all very helpful.)

Thanks all for your replies...

Laura... actually we were thinking of doing this in 5/02. I would love to hear how yours goes though.

See that, we were actually considering switching to HAL. I guess we just had such a BAD experience with the party crowd on Carnival that we were going to the extreme opposite.

I still keeping checking the sites to see if the itinerary has come out for next yr. Seems May is the turnaround for the ships, so I am not sure which one will be doing E. Car. at that time.

I definitely don't want to be the youngest or oldest on the ship. We just really want a quiet ride at sea. With ALOT of food to sample! That is my biggest panic. We love to snack at night and will be horrified if there aren't 24 hr cafe's. Since we like snacking pretty much every night... we would like it included! Imagine that bill!

Yeah, we weren't thrilled about most of the stops on some of the others. I was even tempted to try a ship going to San Juan and just staying on the boat instead.

OMG, could you imagine someone tossing a chair!? On Carnival they had to stop the boat because an intoxicated person was threatening to jump off the boat. They got him back to his cabin and we heard they put an armed guard in front of his door. Never heard of this in my life, but I guess anything is possible... it was JUST a rumor.

So... it seems RCCL just might be the "ship of dreams"....

Cruiser 101 - don't think it only happens on Carnival, had a horrible experience on the Voyager last Jan with unruly kids and adults!
Vision of the Seas has had some pretty bad problems with kids also, one group broke into one of the bars and smashed all the bottles and glasses and then threw the chairs overboard. It can happen on any ship. Just got back from the Inspiration and it was a really great cruise, no unruly partying adults or kids, no one in tank tops, cut off jeans and baseball hats at dinner like on the Voyager either. Also, check out the board, even HAL had problems with unruly kids at Christmas, it's everywhere, maybe because people aren't allowed to spank their kids anymore!

jwine... my jaw dropped reading your post. I have only sailed on Carnival and hadn't heard of those sorts of problems on the others. I am so glad you brought that to my attention. I would have thought Jan would have had less kids as well. How long were your sailing trips?

We thought January was a safe month also, boy were we wrong! We were on a 7-day on the Voyager out of Miami, it was the "cruise from hell". First time I ever wanted to just get off the ship and go home. What was very disturbing to me and many other fellow cruisers was that RCI refused to take any action and stop all this distrubtion by these
kids. My favorite quote is from the Pursor "they paid". What did she think the rest of us did, stow away? Just got back from the Inspiration and had a wonderful time. We were told there were about 150 kids on board but had no problems whatsoever. The security people never left anything get out of hand. One afternoon some little kids were jumping in the pool and they were right there telling them to stop. No running, no kids crawling on the floor in the dining room, no kids in the showroom distrubting the entertainers, no kids in the casino, or lounges, it was a very nice cruise. Also, the adults were much better dressed in the dining room in the evening on the Inspiration than on the Voyager, we didn't see tank tops, shorts and baseball caps like we did on the Voyager, it was worse than being at McDonalds!

Hmmm... have you ever heard of something "kids out" or something like that? I wonder if it actually exists, where there are certain ships that do not advertise it, but do not allow kids onboard?

I've been on Voyager as well as the sister ship of Enchantment(Granduer)and am going on the Enchantment in Feb. The Voyager was truly beautiful but not your tradtional cruising experience. (Voyager was my 7th cruise). It did and will always have VERY MANY kids on board. That ship caters to the family w/ children. The amenities will attract a younger crowd. In fact I believe that is the direction RCCL is going...just check out their commercials. Their commercials are geared more towards action packed, fast paced, family vacation as opposed to the way some other lines advertise. Just listen to the music they play in the commercial...

Voyager lacks the intimacy you would find on a smaller ship. It just caters to too many people 3,500. Yes, it is a beautiful ship but a lot is lost. I cruise not only for the ship but for the service and who my fellow pax's might be. For the first time ever, I left not feeling utterly relaxed and I was actually looking forward to go home. This is coming from someone who sleeps, eats and dreams cruises. Choose the Enchantment...I think you'll be happier!!! Good luck.
