My vote for ugliest stern (I know that's not Beezo's topic but I can't resist) is that on the new Princess ships, especially Grand; they look like someone took a giant knife and chopped off the stern.

In the category of the liners I like the stern of the Costa Riviera.Between the modern cruise ships I like the Norwegian Wind and Dream.

Winner, I think this picture demonstrates your point:

of course there are many other modern ships with ugly sterns:

Even ships that are well liked, on closer inspection can look rather like 'lego' bricks:

As far as I'm concerned, Aurora has the nicest stern (as well as bow and side profile - an all-round class act). Malcolm, Mistral is truly unforgivable (having said that I hear she has nice interior, good food and service, interesting itineraries and good value - unforgivable...hmmm, well maybe not), but I personally quite like Celebrity's Century class sterns. Just an opinion.

Paddy.

In my opinion the ships with cruiser sterns are the most beatifull of all.
Many significant liners of the 20th century were built with cruiser stern (the Queens, EUROPA, BREMEN, CONTE DI SAVOIA, CARONIA, etc...).
That's is the reason that I'm atracted by PRINCESS DANAE and SWITZERLAND, their cruiser sterns are now an almost extinct form, it gives them a very elegant look.

But without shadow of doubt my favorite stern (the only one that I really like that isn't a cruiser stern ) is of the NORMANDIE, the most elegant of them all.

NORMANDIE on reverse, showing her elegant stern

On the modern cruise ships the CARONIA/SAGA ROSE are among the best afloat.

The most ugly: MILLENIUM, damn, that thing looks like a river barge... MISTRAL is also one sorry sight to see.

I agree about the stern of the Millinnium. Frankly, I just don't know what they were thinking when they decided on the painting of hull..... she would look much better without all the confusing lines- blue, black, yellow, red..... I feel she looks like something out of a comic book.

Here is something new, different, and in my opinion attractive- for a modern cruise ship:

Those beautiful counter sterns on the classic liners of long ago up until the 1930's...especially the one that the REX had...the INDEPENDENCE is the last such surviving ship with a counter stern...not very practical, but gorgeous.

I think the MV Grand Princess
has a beautiful stern.
It would be award winning if there were no balconies there. It does look like
a shopping cart. Now suppose A giant were to pick up the Grand Princess.
Where would he do it?

The Grand Princess' bow could be more open, flat like on the MV Explorer of the Seas.

The MS Mistral and the MV Mercury do
have eccentric sterns.

Have a grand time,
Jesse
