I realize, everyone has their own idea of what a perfect cup of coffee is... But which ship, in your opinion, served the best cup of coffee? I would have to say Palm Springs Cafe on the Mercury. They served a different brand in the dining room that was awful! Anyone try "Blue Mountain Coffee" from Jamaica? We love it!

I think that Costa cruises offers the best coffee on the 7 seas!Is a very important part of its acclaimed "cruising italian style".The worst is offered by the parent company Carnival cruises(a very strange situation).

We just returned from a week on the Century and I found the coffee to be very good - and I was prepared for it to be awful from what I had heard before we sailed. We were pleasantly surprised.

Mercy - Yes, I have had Blue Mountain coffee from Jamaica. Always used to buy a couple of pounds when we were in Ocho Rios, but haven't been there in years. Best coffee I did buy was in Costa Rica - La Manita Terrazu - very inexpensive there but so expensive here.
HAL's coffee has always been terrible, especially in the Lido, so can't say I have had a good cup of coffee on a ship. They tried Starbucks for a while but for some reason stopped serving it.

Noat a cruise ship, but the ebst coffee I ever tasted was on a British Airways Airbus A320 from Heathrow to Belfast. After a full meal of course, on a one hour flight. Do the American airlines offer service anything remotely like that (in coach)?

Paddy.

Not on an hour flight. Think we got pretzels and beer on a flight from Montreal to Toronto, once . You may get a juice, coffee and a package of cookies, if you are lucky!
I'm having fun with these smilies!

I've never had good coffee on a ship either. Always forget to take some of my favourite 'instant' with me and give it a try.

On HAL, the 'special' after dinner coffee of the day is passable providing you request 'with double please' whatever is in it.

Kona coffee is our favourite -

Mercy,
I'm assuming the Blue Mountain you had was not on a ship. The real stuff (as opposed to mis-labeled counterfeit) is over $20/lb. Not something a cruise line would buy in bulk!

Green,
I agree that 100% Kona (again, over $20/lb) is something rare and special. Bay View Farms and Greenwell farms are my choice. Both do mail order. Again, if a line called their coffee Kona, I'd automatically assume it's a blend, with as little as 5% to 10% estate grown Kona.

A friend of mine who is a true coffee expert (o.k....coffee snob) gave NCL a passing grade.

tg_lindo - you are right abut the Kona. My friend in Honolulu occasionally sends me a couple of bags of Lion Brand Kona, but it is a mix, with very little real Kona in it. Last time we were in Kona, I wanted to buy some at the Kona Coffee factory, and was stunned to find out the price of the "real" stuff. It is so expensive here in Toronto, Second Cup usually only brings it in for Xmas. Think it is around $25-30 a pound.
Re Blue Mountain - I used to buy it in Jamaica, where it was inexpensive, but then again it is too expensive to buy here. I also doubt that the ships would serve it.
My mouth is watering - time for a coffee!

tg_lindo.. We did indeed buy the Blue Mountain coffe in Jamaica, last Spring on our Western Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Sky. But.. We bought it in a grocery store in Ocho Rios, it was less expensive there than the tourist shops. We didn't realize how good it was until we got home. We were sorry we didn't get more. I found a place to order it on-line, but the shipping is expensive.

Based on the Travelpage reviews, Premier Cruises served the best nothing.
For those of you who have not read the reviews, none of the Premier cruises had memorable food.

Have a delicious time,
Jesse

Although I like a nice cup of coffee, the quality of coffee on a ship has no bearing on my overall cruise experience!

I never had a problem with any of the coffee on HAL, but then I dump in so much cream anything could be in the cup and I would drink it. My husband's only complaint was it was extremely hot at dinner. He enjoyed the Java bar. I liked the "Captain's coffee" after dinner.

Oh, Gizmo - to have a hot cup of coffee at dinner - that would be wonderful. Don't think I can really say that I every had a hot cup coffee, mind you the coffee at dinner was better than the Lido's. I like the Java bar also and the Captain's coffee. My husband always had the Engineer's Coffee - now this was a concoction that one of the Chief Engineers introduced us to. Unfortunately neither he nor my husband are here to tell us what is consisted of - should have got the recipe.
Will have to see if I can find out what it was when I am on the Veendam next month.
Priced the Kona Coffee at Second Cup the other day and I think she said it was around $28.00 Cnd per pound - they bring it in for Christmas - and I don't even know if this is a blend or the real stuff. Too expensive for me!

Sympatico,

If you can find out what was in the "Engineer's Coffee" I would love to know. I am always game for trying a new coffee drink.

I learned on the Vision of the Seas that they do not use perked or drip coffee. It is a concentrate like a syrup and I believe that the NCL Wind uses the same system. Kevin

Just got back from the Eastern Caribbean. I found some REAL Blue Mountain coffee in Nassau! It was $19.95 for 16 oz. I bought 5 packages! I didn't want to carry anymore. I was already loaded down from the other stuff I bought I was also delighted to discover that I could purchase Tortuga Rum Cake aboard the Millennium. YUM! I am having a slice right now with my coffee

Mercy - Tortuga Rum Cake - gorgeous - haven't found it on HAL but always pick up some in Nassau - remember it's fattening!!

Plan on getting some real Kona coffee in a couple of weeks.

Cheers

Mercy - my mouth is wastering.
The coffee on the Veendam at Xmas was quite good - they must have changed brands or the way they are making it.
Gizmo - didn't find out the recipe for Engineer's coffee - no one knew what it was

All coffee on board is pretty terrible. Though we had a couple of good pots on the Pacific Princess which our steward brewed in the Pantry after we complained about the coffee.

Yes, we tipped him well.

Mercy -
Only have had Blue Mountain coffee in Jamaica - wonderful! Have not seen it in Florida. Enjoy every drop!

Simpatico -
On HAL the room service coffee has always been better than the Lido, where for the past several years they were using a syrup base - really undrinkable. You are right about Starbucks - but HAL discontinued serving it because of the complaints! We were on the Zaandam in November, and like your Christmas experience on the Veendam, the coffee had improved in the Lido. When all is said and done, there is nothing like a good cup of coffee - right??

Kathy & Kevin- Next time you get a bag of Kona check to see if it is 100%. What kind does your nephew send you? I just finished one bag..it says 100% Hawaiian coffee but doesn't say if it is Kona - am sure it was not pure and have another bag of of Lion Brand Macadamia Flavoured - that definitely is not pure - but yummy. You can order Lion Brand over the internet www.lioncoffee.com or phone 1-800-338-8353 - they have a very nice catalogue. I didn't know there was a difference in Kona coffees - I always get it from my friend in Honolulu, but when I was in the Kona Coffee Co. store in Kona I found out there is a big difference and a big difference in price. I went to buy a bag of the "pure" Kona last time I was there and was shocked at the price and for me that was US$'s. I like coffee, but won't pay that price for it. Now, chocolate covered macadamia nuts, that a different story

obx: - I know they had Starbucks for a while, & discontinued it ...too many complaints. You are right - that junk they served that was a mixture of syrup and water was TERRIBLE. The Java Cafe bar is pretty good. Got a good cup of coffee one morning in the HM's office!

Celebrity no question !! I look forward to the morning coffee almost as much as the food... However, when you leave 4 feet of snow in Canada and in 6 hours you are in the Caribbean maybe any coffee would taste great.
