See corrected post -

Starting in '77

Old Statendam - did the Atlantic on her enroute to her stretching.
Stretched Statendam
Rotterdam V
Rotterdam V1 - 2 Trans-Atlantic
Noordam
Nieuw Amsterdam
Westerdam
Volendam
Ryndam
Maasdam
I guess we total 20 Cruises but my Log is lost to me tonight - my filing system leaves much to be desired!

Also 8 T-A Crossings (1 on QE2) prior to '77.

Sea days are important so Panama Canal (Ft. Lauderdale to Vancouver). Hawii and T-A are favourites. That's not to say that we didn't enjoy all the others.....Cruising is our favourite vacation.

We're working on 2001!

HAL IS A GREAT LINE.

As passenger, I've been cruising only once on the Costa Marina in 1994 (7-day Western Mediterranean cuise). Between 1986 and 1995 I've been on board cruise ships for about a month every year since my father was working there.
It's amazing to see how many cruises people are taking.

Green - were you having a "Senior's Day". The old Statendam was never stretched - it was the Westerdam you were on across the Atlantic for stretch!!

We've sailed:

Royal Princess;
Monarh of the Seas;
Crown Princess;
Zenih (x3);
Ocean Princess;

But the best are:

Statendam (x5)
Ryndam (x4)
Veendam (x5)
Noordam
Maasdam (3)
Rotterdam (x4)
Zaandam (x2)

Those "dam" ships are IMO, the best.

Looking forward to Volendam in February and Maasdam in May....hopefully, Zaandam in July.

[B]Topgun, I'm curious, why was the Pacific Princess the best, and why Nordic Empress the worst

geno-r, I hope that you are not trying to provoke WW3 when you ask this question. It gives rise to controversial issues and depends on an individuals point of view.

I am working class/ middle class, reasonably well educated, but not to University standards. This probably sets the scene for my opinions.

Now concerning the Nordic Empress situation, this was a repeat to Bermuda with RCI, a line that I held in high regard.
Immediately on sailing from New York there were a number of things occurring on board that I had never experienced before.
The ship was very noisy,with babies crying in the cabins.
Young children in the 8-12 age bracket were running in the aisles outside the cabins until the late hours.
Going to dinner, we had to sidestep around teenage groups slouched on the stairs whose attitude virtually challenged us to make an issue of it.
At second seating dinner, we encountered a large number of extremely slovenly dressed adults with table manners no better than caveman standards.

It got worse. It was impossible to use the pool. It was a mass of children all day.

The Captains dinner was a fiasco. Many passengers as usual had taken time to dress in their best finery. Others who hadn't ,appeared at the same tables with dirty running shoes, albeit they had put on clean T shirts and most of the males had troubled to shave.

And so it continued. We could only consider a high percentage on this cruise to be to riffraff. Why this sudden change over such a short period. We just couldn't figure out. We do however realise that it was the right of these passengers to do their own thing. Our resolve was to stay away from RCI in future and try to be more educated in selecting our cruises.

To end up, whats good about Pacific Princess? She is small. 6-700 passengers.
The ship is older with no big pools or whirlpools.
Being 1970's vintage she doesn't have the pizzaz nor cabins with multiple accommodation to draw family style cruisers.
Princess cruises are obviously thinking about the wide variety of different passengers on their vessels. As simple examples, they reserve the right to limit the number of children on their vessels for any one sailing.
Additionally, no child under the age of 12 years is permitted to use the elevators unescorted. At last, you can use the elevators in the evening.
Just a pleasure to be on. Also a relief that there is still an alternative style of cruising at reasonable cost to those of us that prefer it.
