Today the national papers in The Netherlands reported that a bussinessman from Amsterdam has placed a bid to buy the SS Rotterdam 5.

The man visited the ship last week in the Bahama's.

He wants to make the ship a conference-centre and Hotel in the harbour of Amsterdam. He even has talked about the ship to be a local PARTYSHIP!!!!

The citizens of the city of Rotterdam are very upset about this.

The Rotterdam was build in Rotterdam and the city used to be the homebase of the ship.

The people of Rotterdam asked the mayor of their city to do something about this.

I hope the ship keeps on sailing as a cruiseship, because i never trust these kind of projects.

More news on this soon.

Keep us posted Bernard. Would hate to see her used as a "party boat". I am sure the citizens of Rotterdam are upset.

Didn't those same upset citizens turn down HAL's offer to keep R-v there? I'm not sure of the details, but I understand HAL tried to keep the ship more or less as a museum.

One way or the other I sure would love to see the ss ROTTERDAM back in Holland. Would prefer it to be located in Rotterdam, but Amsterdam probably has a more active tourist trade that would visit the ship.
Please keep us posted Bernard!

Whatever the outcome, I hope something keeps
this remarkable vessel from the scappers. I
would love to see her as part of the museum in Rotterdam at the Wilhelminakada. Long
may she live!!

Tomc..

The citizens of Rotterdam never were against the plans of the ship coming to Rotterdam.

The local government was against it.

The ship has a lot of materials in it that have to be removed before the ship can come to the Netherlands permanently.

When the City of Rotterdam wanted to buy the ship the price was $ 40 million. Now it's $ 25 Million. So it's a lot more atractive for dutch investors to buy this magnificent vessel.

I hope it will go to Rotterdam. Although I live in Amsterdam, I still like Rotterdam much better.

I have visited the City of Rotterdam several times, I sailed the Grand Dame as the Rembrandt; finished cruise 11 days before Premier went under [lucked out big time]. I don't recall a nicer shipboard experience.

Premier gave "Art Tours' of her public areas. She is a floating museum and one of the finest examples of Dutch shipbuilding and mid-century modern design. The acres of fine teak murals, stained glass, Delft porcelain reliefs, brass wainscoting, leaded blown glass, and exotic woods and leathers that are irreplaceable.

Any sale should stipulate that her interiors remian intact!!

Premier made a valiant effort at keeping her original and gave thousands of passengers enjoyment of the magic she brings after HAL retired her. Too bad they did not market her to her strengths.
Www.maritimematters.com has a tour of her public rooms.

If a stationary building, she would be worthy of landmark status.

I have cruised on 8 classic ships and the Rembrandterdam is the finest, and the Canberra was an equal.

I would like to see her sailing again, perhaps reengined with diesel for fuel consumption and maintinence. Vibration is not the problem it used to be. She meets SOLAS. Her stability is excellent, most of the time, you would not know you were moving.

If she becomes a stationary hotel ala Queen Mary, I will stay on her when visiting the city of Rotterdam.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew there was an attempt to buy, sell or donate it to the city and the reports at the time were a bit sketchy.

I never really did understand why HAL got rid of her. The reason was SOLAS and the high cost; but, apparently, Premier managed to fix it up. When I was speaking with crew on the Rotterdam V, we reached a conclusion that, perhaps, the Grande Dame was a little long in the tooth, somewhat inefficient in use of space and it had problems in the engine room. In other words, the next to go ... but how do you tell the family that you're pulling the plug on Granny?

This was conjecture on our part. The crew I spoke with hated to see her go, but knew it was inevitable and soon. I bought all the reasonably-priced "ss Rotterdam" stuff I could find. It is on proud display in my house.

I certainly hope Rembrant finds a home as a working ship rather than a stationary object. Holland America/Carnival sold the ship mainly because she didn't fit in with their marketing image anymore, the cost of meeting SOLAS being a bit of a smokescreen. (Also they could make more money out of a new ship.) I agree that Canberra was Rembrant's British equal, both great ships. I hear that 5 of the Premier ships are up for auction shortly, the Seabreeze's auction being early next week. Looks like we'll soon know Remrant's fate.
