What's it like? Besides Platinum Card holders, penthouse guests, or a member of their 'frequent cruisers club', who gets invited? How are selection made? From guest roster? I've often wondered. In 1990, was seated at the table on Carnival with a gent who was designing the sister to Fantasy. Actually, he was very charming, quite funny, and not stuffy at all. Wondered what it would be like to dine with the Captain?

I have never sat at the Captain's table during a cruise, but had dinner at a friend's house with a HAL Captain and have had dinner with a Chief Officer many times, on and off the ship.
I have no idea how they pick "who sits with the Captain" and no one can seem to tell me.
Maybe they throw eveyone's name into a hat and have a draw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What are they like - they are like everyone else. Sometimes interesting and fun to be with and sometimes "stuffy". Depends on the person.

On my first cruise we were seated with the chief engineer and his wife and 15 year old son who had flown out from Swansea (Wales) to see him. It was second seating and we had it changed from first, so I think it was done because I was close in age to their son. The Chief engineer and his wife, my parents and the other couple were around the same age, so I think that is why. It was quite a surprise to see them on our first night with them. They were very nice people.

Paddy.

On our last cruise (Zaandam) we were invited to dinner at the Captain's table. It was very enjoyable and not at all "stuffy". We knew the Maitre D' (had sailed with him on a previous cruise) and perhaps that is why we were invited. Would love to have the opportunity again!

On our cruise back in March on the Volendam, we were invited to sit at the Captain's table. The only thing in common was all 3 couples had a table for two. Two couples had a suite and 1 couple a mini suite. Captain Hans was not stuffy but a very funny man. We had a great time.

Balcony; I believe sometime back in March there was quite a long post with a lot of input on this subject. Hopes this helps.

I have cruised mostly on HAL. I've been fortunate to sit at a table with an officer on several occasions. My husband and I always ask to be seated at a large table, and this usually results in an officer at table on formal nights. One of the nicest experiences came during a world voyage segment in '98. I had the impression that nearly everyone was invited to the Captain's banquet once. This was a multi-course extravagant meal, with courses that I never heard of before, including "noisette". Each course was announced, each two guests had a waiter between them, everything was impressive. A night to remember!

I was on the Horizon back in 1990 on her ninth cruise. I was nine and was traveling with family. My parents were invited to the Captain's Table even though we were just staying in an ordinary outside room on the last deck.

My parents did not go because the invitation did not include the entire family and felt bad leaving two kids with no one for dinner
