Finally, tonight we made up our minds to book the Royal Princess. Any comments about her? Looks as though it's going to be quite expensive w/tours, and post or pre-cruise. I'm told with their Air/Sea program, we have to pay extra for a greeter at the airport. I find that "tacky" to say the least. But, oh, the good part (for me anyway) all the cabins are outside (or balconies)

"A Greeter", I have never heard of such a thing and it certainly is tacky. I have seen reps from cruise lines waiting for passengers at the airports, but never heard of having to pay for one, at least HAL never charges for this service.
Wonder what others have to say about this.

Good for you Balcony, I am sure you will have a wonderful time. We went to see the Royal Princess and Crown Princess when she was docked in Greenock in August, and I must say she looks a elegant ship from the outside, well proportioned and has those horseshoe deck areas aft.

I have never heard of paying for a greeter, we have been with Princess from the UK and they took very good care of us from start to finish, there were people in Gatwick Airport guiding us to wherever but we certainly did not have to pay for them. Maybe this is a new thing to put more money in the coffers for the cruise line, it seems they will try almost anything now.

Which Itinerary are you taking? No matter where you go I am sure you will have a great time on board.

Cheers
M.

I am sorry to report that this seems to be
the way with Princess Cruises. I will not
sail with them again. Besides being pressed
every hour on board to buy something, now
this. I used to think Royal Princess was
my favorite Princess ship, but the last time
on board I felt the cabins were SO narrow.
The cabins on the Crown and Regal Princesses
are much nicer.....the best in the fleet.
I hope you find things much improved when
you sail. Many on this chat line will dis-
agree with me, but what I've mentioned has
been my experience.

Personally, I like the Royal Princess best of all their ships. It's more elegant and sophisticated than the others, as well as smaller (about 1200 passengers). That said, I haven't been on a Princess ship in about 5 years and even then they were always pushing us to buy, buy, buy. Very annoying - one of the reasons I tried other lines. AND, if they're charging for the "meet & greet" service, that alone would be reason for me to cancel a cruise. That mindset (of charging passengers for every little thing, and nickel & diming us to death) is becoming more wide-spread among the cruise lines. I won't do it...which is why I save my pennies for Crystal, QE2, etc.

We are booked on Royal sailing from Buenos Aries to Santiago on Dec.23rd. We sailed the Crown through the Panama Canal and found everything excellent. Apart from the ubiquitous photographers, whom we wave away, how do they push people to buy, buy, buy ?On the subject of excursions we never book in advance. We prefer to do it ourselves and have always had good experiences, most times at much lower costs and,of course, no regimentation. Do your research with local Tourist Boards on the internet. Half the fun of travelling is in the preparation beforehand. Frommer, Fielding and others have loads of books at the local library.

Balcony - I am wondering if you misunderstood having to pay a greeter. You do have to pay for your Transfer on the Air/Sea cruise package. I deal with Princess Cruises a lot through my Agency and have never been asked to pay for a greeter for a client.

Athens-Rome, 2001; with w-post night in Rome.
and taking SeaBird program. I'm so nervous, I feel like I've been nominated for an Oscar. I hope I don't forget to apply for a passport! I'm told, that "yes" someone will meet us at the airport (to ship) for a small charge. No charge from ship (post cruise)to hotel. What's with this BUY, BUY!! Agressive marketing of their souveniors on board? It could be annoying, but I won't be pressured to over spend. PLEASE....tell me ANYTHING you can about Line and Ship!

5 of our 11 cruises have been on Princess' ships and I can't say that there is any more pressure to buy "things" than on other lines.

Merchandise IS on display (alternately T-shirts, "designer watches", sometimes off-season beach or warm-wear, etc.) on occaision but you're not BOMBARDED with announcements. There may be a flyer in the daily "Princess Patter" but not much more.

I think too many people jump on negative bandwagons when there's nothing else to complain about.

As a matter of fact I would rather read about the MANY GOOD THINGS that are experienced on these cruises rather than these petty complaints.

Regarding charges for having a representative meet you at the airport, Princess' brochures specifically state on their "Seabird Air Program" page that "Princess Cruises Transfer Program" offers the convenience of an airport meet-and-greet service which includes motorcoach transfer between airport and ship at (small) fees per person.

Additionally, did you specifically option for Princess' $50 "Deviation" fee giving you the right to select your own airline, flights AND THEREFORE SEATING instead of being completely at their mercy. That fee also includes the service of being met and escorted by a Princess Host(ess) at the airport?

THANK YOU joeO,
that's exactly what they said. I've never cruised Princess, but know that Carnival definitely is a courtesty and RCCL probably would meet/greet at no charge. Fortunately, I'm in FLA and can drive to my ports, so I never purchase air. This time, we're flying to Europe - so I don't know and am seeking answers.

joeO, Princess is going to cost us a hefty sum vs. Costa. How is the entertainment? food? cabins (small?); passengers?

What about HAL? I heard the passengers have wheel chairs races and majority are in their 60's - 70's; that HAL shuts down shows and entertainment early for the grey haired set. I'm a baby boomer, too old for the disco set. But, I love to watch the younger ones dance. "Balcony"

Balcony, you asked about HAL and the age of their passengers. HAL's reputation for having mostly older passengers was not born out on our cruise to the Caribbean this summer. After our cruise, my wife and I visited a shopping mall in Florida. It seemed to me that the mix of passengers' ages on the ship was the same as the mix of shoppers' ages at the mall. It was certainly not mostly older folks.

Hi...the extra charges for the airport/ship transfers with Princess came about because of all that nonsense of Florida politicians looking for votes. They were sued for including everything so now you get a breakdown and you can take it and pay, or leave it. Don't blame the company, blame the bottom feeders.
Our last on Princess was a month on the Royal in Dec. and I certainly don't think they were pushing anything except to us maybe the art auctions, but then there was always a good crowd there.
Anyway, the whole thing about cruises is that it's the ideal place for one to do as little or as much as one likes, and I see Princess is going further with it's dining options program so that in certain dining rooms you'll be able to reserve a table and time for that evening. Good for them, I'm all for choice....peter

Hi Balcony:

You actually asked my input on a different thread, but I think my answer belongs here. The main reasons I love Royal Princess:
1) She feels like a real ship, not a floating hotel.
2) She has wonderful flow from one area to the others.
3) With no inside cabins, the passageways are wider than other ships.
4) There is a dedicated, and comfortable, movie theatre.
5) A great 360 degree wraparound teak promenade deck.
6) Very good food served by wonderful Italian waiters.
7) Intimate, only 1200 passengers with very nice lounges.
Lastly, because she was designed for deep water sailing, she rides very well despite being small by today's standards.

James

A MOVIE THEATRE!!!? ARE YOU SERIOUS?! The last movie I saw outside of my home was the Titanic! My work keeps me so busy (18 hour days) I have no time for any outside pleasures. I'm getting spaced out with anxiety. James, it was worth the extra $$ to cruise on the Royal, huh? "balcony"

Balcony---

So many of these questons can only be answered subjectively. One mans food is another's poison.

Of the 4 lines I've sailed entertainment is VERY MUCH THE SAME ON ALL. If you've sailed often, "production shows" all seem to merge into each other. Comedians are usually a little better that mediocre, specialty acts (acrobats, magicians, singers, musicians), some mixed with comedy, may be the most entertaining..

As far as food is concerned, I consider Celebrity the best to my taste, then Princess. RCI and NCL are far back.

Expensive cruises, ie; fly-sail on expensive ships tend to be filled with people who can afford them. Seniors if not during school holiday times. During holidays tendancies are for more younger people (and their kids.)

Room size is the easiest to find out.
Celebrity publishes room sizes in their brochures (174, 175 sq. ft. not including veranda.)

Dial 1-800-PRINCESS and they will tell you the area of any cabin on any of their ships. Crown & Regal Princess are the largest in the fleet at 199 sq.ft. for non-veranda.
Sun,Ocean,Sea,Dawn around 188. I don't know Royal's.
RCI's much smaller (around 157, older ships even smaller)

But call up the Cruise lines. The calls are all toll-free and I've never heard them not try to help.

Good luck and enjoy..
