We have booked our first cruise. Our cabin is at the back of the ship. I was wondering if this is a good place to be or if the sides of the ship would have better views pulling into port. I also wonder if it is hard to change your cabin once you have it reserved.

I tihink it depends tremendously upon the particular ship you are sailing. Some rules of thumb include that the stern may experience more motion, both sea motion (slow) and vibrations (from the screws or azipods or whatever). Those rules probably apply more to smaller ships (rule 1) and older ships (rule 2). Neither of these may have much to do with YOUR enjoyment of YOUR cruise. Any room on a ship sounds really good to me right now (107 degrees in Dallas - whew). Happy cruising!

I think most people would agree that amidships is the best cabin location all things considered. You will probably be on deck coming in to ports if you really want to see the scenery, and you won't know which side will be best until you get there. As far as changing, it depends on how heavily booked the ship is. Your travel agent is in the best position to advise you. Motion and motion sickness is also a consideration for cabin location

We have been in a Cat C (balcony) on Royal Caribbean twice, once on the Legend of the Seas and once on the Voyager of the Seas in the stern of the ship. The balconies were larger and so was the cabin on the Voyager and we never experienced any extra vibration or discomfort. In fact we have booked a Cat AA on the Ocean Princess which is a stern cabin because we love that position so much.

GreggH, what ship is it?

You will probably want to be out on deck coming into and leaving port. The stern may not be too bad for vibration depending how high a deck you are on and the ship/age in question. On some old ships all cabins vibrate a little!

Motion will not be a problem if the seas are kind. All cabins experience some motion in heavy seas - midships is best. However, don't worry about it, there are lots of "Depends" - you will probably not spend much time in you cabin anyway. Just enjoy your first cruise.

Thanks everyone. We will be sailing on Voyager. I will stop worrying about our cabin location and look forward to our first cruise.
