As reported earlier, a vibration had been detected in certain areas of the ship under certain sea conditions. This vibration has been linked to the design of the stern hull. Shipyard workers will use the dry-dock period to attach a buffer to the aft section of the hull, which will eliminate the vibration. This work is expected to take three weeks.
Regrettably, the unscheduled dry dock will necessitate the cancellation of one two-night and three seven-night Caribbean voyages. Guests booked on any of the four cruises will receive a full refund, plus additional compensation. Guests on the seven-night cruises, November 26, December 3 and 10, will receive a 50 percent discount on any future Celebrity seven-night Caribbean sailing, excluding certain holidays. Guests booked on the two-night sailing, November 23, will receive a $100 credit for a future Celebrity cruise.
Travel agents with guests sailing on these cruises will have their commissions protected on the cancelled sailings. Full details will be provided directly to all travel agents with clients affected by the cancellations.
The company is continuing to review the matter with the ship's builder, Chantiers de L'Atlantique, and expects the bulk of any costs associated with the dry dock to be covered by the builder.
Celebrity Cruises' President Richard Sasso likened the vibration to squeaky brakes on a new car. ``It's not a safety issue and it's not a comfort issue, but, with a brand new ship, you want it fixed as soon as possible,'' Sasso explained.
Currently, Millennium is sailing 10- to 14-night cruises in Europe. It is scheduled to arrive in New York on November 15 for several days of inaugural activities and begin cruising from Fort Lauderdale on December 17, following the dry dock.
Similar modifications will be made on Millennium's sister ship, Infinity, while it is still under construction at the shipyard.
Celebrity Cruises is the highest-rated premium cruise line in the industry and has the youngest fleet of any major cruise line. Millennium joined the fleet in June, Infinity and Summit will be launched in 2001, and a fourth Millennium-class ship will debut in 2002.
What can I say. I was originallybooked on the transatlantic crossing and we cancelled it beacuse there was 12 travelling and another 2 wanted to join us. So we switched to accomodate them.Oh well I guess im not the only one to be disappointed. My thoughts go to everyone else who should have sailed on the 26th and the other two dates. Hopefully we will all have the opportunity to sail on her in the not too distant future.
best wishes Stu
They did say she was going to drydock @ Newport News after the transatlantic cruise for 4 weeks or so (the crew was looking forward to the break). My advice...keep your bookings. Many fellow cruisers were sailing for free on our cruise due to the inital cancellation. They were given a full refund as well as this cruise for free!
Believe me, she is worth the wait. Food was great (other than room service which was so-so)and the service was excellent! The only complaint is that 14 days was not enough!
