Yes, I am, but out of San Juan. Would have preferred Ft. Lauderdale, but we are going with a group and this is where they decided to go. The large family that is with the group was given the choice of ships and they decided they wanted to get right into warmer weather right away. Now we have to fly Delta and change in Atlanta, whereas if we had flown into Miami or Ft.L. it would have been Air Canada, non-stop. I know we could have gone on our own, but being with a group is much nicer and my daughter has not been to some of the islands we are going to.
Are you going on a Christmas Cruise? Which ship?
Forgot to say we will be on the Veendam.

Hi sympatico,

We are considering a Christmas cruise
(our first Christmas cruise) and I
know that most of the "big" lines have
cruises from Miami or Ft Lauderdale.
We are not sure of what would be best.
Any suggestions ?

Thanks,
John.

Sorry, kbozman, can't help you there, altho HAL has number of ships leaving from Ft. Lauderdale - Westerdam, Maasdam, Ryndam, Volendam, Zaandam, and Noordam. Rotterdam is leaving from Boston/Ft. Lauderdale on a 14/16 day cruise and the Amsterdam from Costa Rica.
I would recommend any of these ships. Remember the Westerdam and Noordam are older ships and do not have Verandahs, if you are considering one.
Good luck.
Jean Elmore - where are you staying in PR and when do you sail. We sail the 22nd Dec.
Maybe we can wave to each other!

Hello there....

I am sailing with the MAASDAM out of Ft.Lauderdale,Dec.24th for their 11-day Christmas and New Year cruise.
Because of the possibility of bad weather here in the Toronto area,I shall be flying on the 23rd and staying overnight at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 Hotel(I always enjoy this particular hotel, mainly for the revolving cocktail bar on the roof!)

Hi Sympatico...I'm back!!! Like you say,it's good to fly to Ft.Lauderdale from Toronto non-stop on Air Canada....

We will be on the Westerdam on Dec. 23, 2000.
Anyone else going on this cruise? This will be our third cruise. This cruise will be stange without a verandah.
We also have a fourth cruise booked on the Zaandam for Feb.5, 2001...anyone going on that cruise? We are having trouble finding people going on our cruises. Last time it was so easy finding people online that were taking the same cruise as us! OH WELL!
EVERYONE HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS!

We will be taking our first cruise ever, on the Volendam, Dec 22, 2000. We will be taking our teens, ages 15 and 18; we are worried that they will have a difficult time finding many other teens on board ship as we have been told the line is usually host to the 50 and older crowd. Any info on teens would be appreciated.

Hi nan...

Just returned from a Baltic cruise on the ROTTERDAM.There were lots of teens and pre-teens on board. Unfortunately, many of them were unruly and a downright nuisance at times. For instance, riding scooters in the hallways, running up and down the hallways and stairs, knocking on doors and running away,(mine especially,or so it seemed!),
hitting all the buttons in the elevators as they left, emptying the bottles of lotions etc in the sauna and spreading it all over the floor. When taken to task, they were very rude!
My cabin steward was very upset at the state of one of his cabins being "abused" by some kids(ice-cream smeared deliberately all over the walls etc).Took him ages to clean it all properly....totally unacceptable as far as I was concerned!

Some parents/grandparents were spoken to and things did improve. I am sad to say though, that the elevator problem was usually
caused by very tall late-teens who thought it was hilarious.

When you board the VOLENDAM,no doubt you will be given some info on Club HAL.It is a program for Kids and Teens, ages 5-12 and 13-17. There are some safety rules in this info, which reads as follows:-

Parents should remind their children that due to the ship's movement, they should walk, not run and refrain from playing in the elevators.

Parents are ultimately responsible for the behaviour of their children, both when they are participating in the Club HAL program and when outside the scheduled activities.

Kids and teens are encouraged to conform to the suggested dress for the evening.

nan,I am not trying to put a damper on you plans, just want you to be aware of some of the problems which can occur.
Hopefully, everything will go swimmingly for you and your family.

Please let us all know how things work out.

Have a wonderful cruise!

Nan,

Don't worry about the kids. There will be others there.

Also, being a former teacher, I like to talk to the teenagers. I've never found one yet on any cruise who said they weren't having a great time.

Hi Kbozman

Hope you are holding a cabin for Christmas. Just about all the ships are full and if there are cabins available there is likely no air. The only ship I know that did have space was the Sunbird and I believe there may be some air from Toronto still. These cruises are booked so far ahead and anything available now is gone very quickly.

Jean.

Jean - we are also staying at the Wyndham Old San Juan but we are arriving on the 21st and sailing on the 22nd. You never know we may be in the same ports. Too bad we can't get together but as we don't sail until 10pm, we'll wave to you from the ship!
I've been to San Juan a couple of times but never during the holidays - once we were there in early December. It's been so long since I have been there (ship couldn't get into port the last time) I really can't tell you what to expect. Go to Morro Castle, tour the town - very easy walk - lots of lovely jewellery stores in the old part. There are some vendors right near the ship who sell knock-off watches and I bought a Gucci there last time and it is still working!!!
Just have a great time and a wonderful cruise. Maybe take a tour over to the Baccardi Rum Factory. Hear it is worth seeing.

Thanx Sympatico, we have been in PR a couple of times before but not at the holidays, it will seem strange hearing "feliz navidad" with no snow on the ground and us in shorts(LOL) much like seing the cacti with lights and trimmings in Arizona!!!

Dear Terri Lee. . .
Sorry to hear your fun was hampered by the unruly and rude behavior of some teens/children. My two would not be going on a cruise, or anywhere else to vacation, if either had a history of behaving that way.

Thanks for the info on HAL.

If you still like to talk to, and keep up with the goings-ons of teenagers you must have been one of those great teachers who made a real effort to communicate with students.
Thanks for your response.

Our extended family (24 of us!) will be on the Westerdam, sailing December 23. The 4 grandparents are seasoned cruisers. It will be the first cruise for most of us--including me! I am soooo excited!

We are sailing on the Norway December 23 out of Miami. Anyone else going? I am hoping it is as wonderful a ship as I have heard. Another message board has lots of bad reviews. Any thoughts?
