The following is a BBC report:

BBC CEEFAX 2 – Thu 06 July 2000 – 1000
Liner QE2 Collides with Japan Warship

The Cunard Liner the QE2 has collided with a Japanese warship in the Hudson River off New York. The US Coastguard described the incident as “minor” and damage was limited to paintwork and a railing. The liner was being brought out of mooring when it collided with the Kashima, which is said to have then hit the British warship the HMS Manchester. No-one was reported to have been injured in the incident.

News Flash,
"The Herald Sun" Melbourne,Vic 9.15pm

Japs not Happy.
War was narrowly avoided today, when the American QE2 rammed a Japanese warship in New York, causing alot of damage.
Captain S.Yokointoit, was velly angry and screaming in a loud voice swore it was an act of aggression, and said to get even they would now catch more than there fair share of whales.

The American Captain, Capt.John P.Jones jnr
was heard to say, and I quote,
"Damn, limey ships, they all tend to drive on the wrong side of the road, but what the hell, I'm insured".

N.Kelly reporting.

You can't be serious Baker!

I know the QE2 did have a collision but the report from the 'Herald Sun' is simply xenophobic! CruiseTalk is not anti-Japanease. Next folks will be claiming that it is revenge for Pearl Harbour!

This is the story which appeared in The Daily Telegraph. (Thursday 6th July)

"QE2 collides with warship at New York
The QE2 collided with a Japanese warship in the crowded waters of New York harbour yesterday.
The liner, which was carrying 1,700 passengers, was left with a long scratch towards its stern, while the Japanese vessel, the Kashima, suffered a dent.
The Navy frigate Manchester was also slightly damaged as the Kashima was forced against it. "It wasn't so much a bang, more like a gradual movement," said David Healy, a Royal Navy press officer.
Berthing was difficult because the harbour was littered with boats following the Fourth of July celebrations. The QE2, steered by three tugs and followed closely by the US aircraft carrier John F Kennedy, had to pick its way gingerly towards its berth at pier 92 on the west side of Manhattan.
As the QE2 moved in, one of its tugs stern tugs came loose and drifted off, leaving the liner to swing into the Kashima.
The Japanese admiral happened to be on board the ship," said Bruce Good, a spokesman for Cunard, owners of the QE2. "He said it was an honour to be kissed by the Queen Elizabeth.""

I'll have to find out Dad's version next week!

Baker: Didn't realize the QE2 was an American Ship. Always thought it was BRITISH with a British Captain!?
Anyway, New York harbor was too congested with all the ships, and where was the harbor pilot?
