We are booked on the inaguaral cruise of Carnival Spirit in April 2001. Can anyone tell me of any advantages/disadvantages/perks of an inaguaral cruise. We are flexible enough that if the ship is delayed we can rebook to the correct date. Any info will be appreciated. Also what happens if the cruise is delayed..any compensation? Thanks for any info ANYONE can provide.

In my opionion an 'inaguaral' cruise must be exciting! However, ships are often completed behind schedule i.e. Millenium. If you are flexible, that should not be a problem.

Inaugural cruises are exciting, but just remember that things do go wrong and problems arise on the ship, so don't expect, A class service as the crew will be new to the ship and don't complain if problems arise. Look at the Aurora!
HAL stopped bringing new ships over from the shipyard with passengers because so many problems arose and delays are frequent eg. Zaandam.
We went on the Westerdam when HAL took it over from Home Lines and there were a lot of problems, but we just went with the flow and had a super time. We were on for 2 weeks and one problem was no self-serve laundry facilities and the ship's laundry was so small that it took days to get your laundry back, no irons, ironing boards (HM had them brought on in St. Thomas. Also there was not enough room for everyone to each breakfast and lunch. Dinner was fine as it was in 2 seatings. We made do, tho and had a super time.
Do have a great time when you go.

I had a conversation with a couple who was on the Volendam's inaguaral. Sounded like horror stories to me, but the key is to realize this is an inaguaral and things can go wrong. A couple of the problems on the Volendam was power was lost during dinner,plumbing problems in the suites, and service in the dinning room way below standards. During dinner with the captain, this couple mentioned they were on the inaguaral and Captain Hans just rolled his eyes, shook his head, and said "I hope you find things much improved", which they did. They did say there was an air of excitement and looked at it as an expierence.
