We are trying to arrange our own transportation to Ft. Lauderdale the day before our Dec. 10 cruise.

Are there:
1)any hotels that have free shuttle from airport to hotel near the pier; or
2)any hotels by airport with free shuttle to pier; or
3)what is cost of taxi from airport to pier?

I have stayed at both Pier 66 and Marriott on the Intercoastal, both on 17th Street Causeway. Taxi fare from both hotels to pier is about $5.00. I am sure there other hotels nearby that have a shuttle service. I was talking to a chap on the ship and he stayed at a Marriott in Ft. L. which was farther away from the pier and he said they had a shuttle service to the pier. Think it may have been Marriott Suites at Cyrpress Creek. Taxi fare from airport to pier is around $10.00. Check Travel Page for hotels near the pier and then call the hotel and ask if they have a shuttle service.
Forgot to ask - are you flying into Ft. Lauderdale airport and are you looking for a hotel near the pier to stay at? You don't state this in your post. It is kind of confusing.

Sympatico, you're right, it was a little confusing. I meant we were trying to make arrangements in Ft. Lauderdale, not to Ft. Lauderdale. I think faster than I type sometimes. We are flying into Ft. Lauderdale. Thanks so much for your great information.

denisej - now I understand.
I am going to try and see if I can find the exact name of the hotel that chap told me about. I thought it was something like Silver Springs, but when I told my TA, she said Cypress Creek. I stayed there years ago, and there was no where to shop, but then the other two I mentioned were not near shopping either. Would not stay at the Marriott, across the InterCoastal from Pier 66 again. Too much construction from the bridge. I will let you know what I find out.
There is an Embassy Suites on the same road as Pier 66 and I think someone posted here that it was very nice, had a shuttle, and complimentary breakfast. Look into that one.
I would be interested for the future. Next cruise we are going out of San Juan.
What ship are you going on?

Hello again,

You must love browsing this site. I see your name everywhere. This Travelpage is so wonderful for those who need information from the seasoned cruisers such as yourself. We appreciate you, at least I do. We may become good friends after a while.

Anyway, we are going RCI Enchantment of the Seas. My husband and I went on our first cruise on the Monarch of the Seas (RCI) Jan 30, 2000, Southern route out of San Juan. What ports are you sailing? Love to be able to do that route again, but flights are too expensive for a second cruise in one year especially for 4 now. We're only going again for our two boys 9 and 11 to experience cruising (and because we got some income tax money back for once). We checked into a 4 night Bahamas cruise, and the girl at Buycruises.com said there was a 7 night Eastern where the kids (third and fourth persons) cruise for $74 each in a quad room with us. It ended up only $300 more, total, than the 4 night Bahamian cruise. Can you believe it. Beginning to mid Dec. isn't a high time so they need to do promo's I guess. Have you been to Nassau (I'm sure you have). We're thinking of going to Crystal Cay Marine Park and also a quick tour of Fort Charlotte and Paradise Beach. If you've been there would you know if there's a ferry to the Silver Cay island (I'm sure there is) and how much the cost? We're trying to do our own excursions vs. RCI's because they can be sooo expensive, especially for 4 now. Most if it is transportation and admittance fees which at Crystal Cay I found out was only $16.00 ea. RCI probably charges $35 or more a piece which includes transporation. Any other suggestions if you've been there.

Talk to you soon (I mean write to you soon).

Denise

denisej We stayed at the Embassy Suites for our pre-night,they have an airport pick-up and they will drop you off at the port. The Embessy is a beautiful hotel with a free happy hours and a free breakfest .Some rooms have a view of the port. The last time we cruised out of Ft. Laud. was a year ago so I don't know if anything changed.

Denise - I think NAL & starfish are right. I checked on th Marriott hotel and it is the Spring Hill Suites in Dania - near the airport. Embassy Suites is much closer to the pier.
Wow, that is a great price for your kids. We thought we did well back in '83 when we paid $195 Cdn for our and daughter for her.
I have been to Nassau many times, but rarely get off the ship anymore. Never heard of Silver Cay Island or Crystal Cay Marine Park and have never done a tour here. Went snorkelling once but it wasn't very good. HAL is usually in this port only for a few hours and all I have done is walk around the straw market.
If you are planning on doing all these tours, I hope your ship is in there for the full day. That is a lot to do in one day.
What do you think NAL and starfish? I am sorry I can't suggest any excursions in Nassau.

Thanks Starfish & NAL,
I think we'll do Embassey Suites. Sounds like a great place.

Sympatico, the cost for our kids does not include port & tax though. I think they ended up a total of $203 ea., cruise, port and tax. Still not bad considering that's still less than the 4 night bahamas. As far as Nassau, we are there a full day. You're right, it's a lot to do, but I'm organized to the minute (or try to be) as far as when we have to go on to the next adventure. Silver Cay is just to the north (left) of Paradise Island. The marine park is just like Coral World in St. Thomas if you've been there, except much larger windows below the sea from the web page I saw. It's owned by the same company too I believe. I have read that Nassau itself isn't much to see, that's why we're going beyond the city. Straw market I would like to see. A friend of mine said they went there in '87 on their honeymoon and she bought some coasters or something similar, where the straw is wound up in a coil shape and when they got to Miami and stayed in the hotel that night, she said they had some hitchhikers, there were thousands of ants just pouring out of her bag. That's disgusting. I'm going to be careful with any of my purchases.

Thanks for your input everyone. It's very valuable.

Sympatico......

I'm with you.....I haven't gotten off a
ship in Nassau since the early 80's. I
used to go to Paradise Island for some
hours on the beach, but I don't do that
anymore. I avoid sun these days. I enjoy
the ship when most are ashore. I do try
to visit other ships which may be in port.
Most times I can get aboard.

Where r u looking to go for excursions in Bahama's? Coral world in Bahamas is definetely worth it along with the Straw market. Always bargain and start at 50%!! It's amazing how cheap you can get merchandise for a be firm. Walk away and let them come to u! I have been to just about every island . Diane

Diana, we are going to Nassau in the Bahamas and from what I can tell, Coral World I think is the same thing as Crystal Cay (marine park) which is located on Silver Cay Island. From the pictures I've found on the web, their windows below sea level are like picture windows compared to Coral World in St. Thomas. The kids will just love it.

We are also planning on taking a quick tour of Fort Charlotte. Sounds midevel with the dungeons and all. The kids will think that's cool.

Any particular beaches you would recommend? We're thinking Paradise Beach, we'd like some waves and it looks like that beach being right on the Atlantic side would be perfect.

Thanks for any recommendations you may have to make our stop on Nassau fulfilling.

You sound like you've had experience dickering. I'm so bad at it. I get embarrassed. When my husband dickers with salespeople for cars or anything else, I have to walk away. Maybe I'll give it a try at the Straw Market.

Denise:

I would recommend either Cable Beach on Nausau or Paradise Beach - if I had to choose one I would probably go to Paradise Island, as you can see the Atlantis resort at the same time.

Don't let the straw market vendors intimidate you. They expect you to dicker with them, and as stated in an earlier reply, just walk away if you don't like the price they're giving you. You will be amazed at how much cheaper you can get items if they feel they've lost you as a customer.

Thanks "lblk" for your information. I think Paradise Beach will be our choice. As far as the Straw Market, I'll try to be tough, they'll never see me again anyway, right? I did dicker in St. Maarten with a lady about a $12.00 outfit. I said I'd give her $9.00 and she hemmed and hawed and gave me these sad eyes and said "well, it's the end of the day, I guess $9.00 is OK". My heart just broke, (but I still only paid the $9.00). I have a soft heart for needy people.

Thanks again!

Denise,

The shops in Nassau close early (most at 5pm)so shop earlier in the day. Kids t-shirts can be found 3 for $10.00 at the straw market(the shops charge much more for the identical shirts). Paradise Beach at the Atlantis hotel is off limits(only Disney cruise passengers were allowed), for $32.00 pp you may tour the marine facilities only. Our tablemates were very disappointed as they were denied access. Water taxi to Paradise Island was $6.00 pp return trip. We did the Blue Lagoon excursion with the stingray add on (our 11yr. old son absolutely loved the stingrays). Have a great holiday!

K&K - You're right, we have 2 boys, 9 & 11. I saw the glass tunnel on the web and it looks so facinating. But I understand you have to pay $25.00 pp to even tour the resort. If we were going to stay there all day and enjoy their water park and all, I guess I would pay it.

Lori - can we go to other parts of Paradise beach? It looks like such a long beach on the map.

Thanks for your replies.

Denise,

Our tablemates after being denied access to the beach at the Atlantis attempted to locate a public beach but did not find one and wasted a lot of time. I'm sure there must be one on Paradise Island. Maybe someone else would respond on the destination section on this site. Our tour desk told these people they could visit the Atlantis for 25.00 per person and use all the facilities including the beach. When they arrived at the Atlantis they found the price had gone up to $32.00 per person and did not allow them to use the beach or any pools or water activities. The cost was strictly for a tour of the underground dig which was great but pricey. (By the way this was in March)

Because of such limited time in port you definetly want to be sure of where you are going. When you leave the ship there is a pedestrian walkway which takes you to Rawson Square and Bay Street. You will see the new Welcome Center of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism en route. Be sure to stop there first before getting in your taxi and pick up maps, brochures and other info concerning beaches.

Lori

denisej; Last we were in Nasau you had to pay a fee to use the facilities (water slide, ect...). Somewhere, but I can't find the post someone was talking about a beach at a hotel underconstruction that had a nice beach within walking distance of the ship. I can't remember who, when, or where. Maybe if you start a post on beaches in Nasau that person will read it and tell you about it.

either way hope you and your family have a wonderful trip

Thanks Lori, FatKoala (what a cute name), and K&K.
Fatkoala, you mention AAA, we aren't AAA members. I wouldn't think they'd do this for non-members would they? How much is a membership? Sounds like a great price including transportation both ways and breakfast.
Good idea K&K and Lori about starting another post regarding beaches. Thanks. Also, Lori, the Blue Lagoon tour sounds fabulous. Did you do this one your own or through the cruiseline? We're going RCI. I'll have to look in their excursion booklet.

Denise,

We did our tour to the Blue Lagoon with Carnival cruise lines. The tour left at 12 noon and returned at 5pm. The cost was 26.00 pp without snorkel equipment and 41.00 pp with the stingray add on including the rental of snorkel equipment and entrance fee to the stingray marine park. Some beach areas on the island (where the best snorkeling was) were quite rocky so I would suggest wearing those special water shoes to prevent slipping and sliding. If you decided to do a tour on your own you would taxi to the boats leaving for the Blue Lagoon which are located right next to the Atlantis Hotel on Paradise Island.
