Id like to know - Do you prefer the QE2's interiors A) Now (Year 2000) B) After the 1994 refit (1994 - 1999) or C) Before the 1994 refit. (1987 - 1994)

In your answer could you say why?

I like QE2 best after the 1994 refit and now... before the 1994 refit I think she looked too outdated but today she looks truly beautiful and regal. Cunard do a brilliant job keeping this amazing ship looking the best and she has a long life ahead of her.

As for her out side look, well she looks the best today, the fatter Cunard Red funnel is great and she looks like a brand new ship after the 1999 refit.

What are your opinions. (Please only people who know what the interiors look like - thanks)

Hey Cunard

QE2 looks her best now!
She is perfect.

Pre 1994 she was different. The magrodome was unique but caused a green house effect - its not missed!

I agree with you Cunard - she is the best now.

Can't comment right now.
Assuming the post is still going in September will reply sometime after the 17th when we are due to arrive in New York from Southampton.

I have been on the QE 2 on all three time periods: (A) mid-Feb 2000 after 1999 refit; (B) mid-Feb 1999 before refit; and (C) once in late 1980's for a dinner only when she was in port in Hong Kong. I don't remember too much for (C); only that her interior colours were really dated, garish, and clashed - a lot of purple is what I remember. As between (A) and (B), see comments in the post "Anyone seen QE 2 after refit?", first posted on 01-09-2000 by Barryboat. My preference is clearly for after 1999 refit.

I must agree with everyone - the QE2 certainly looks her best after the 1999 refit. I think that the Caronia restaurant is a credit to the person who redesigned it. To me this is by far the best part of the refit.

We have just booked one of the legs of the World Cruise on her for 2001 - can't wait!!

I think that the refits of 1994, 1996 and 1999 have restored the elegance and glory of this wonderful ship. I totally agree with you Cunard that she has a very long active life ahead of her.

When I sailed on her in 1998 I spoke to captian Warwick about his thoughts of the future of the QE2. He said that she is good for a least 10-15 years as a transatlantic liner (with high-speed capability). After that she can be used for many, many years as a cruiseship - he said.

In 2010 QE2´s engines will be 23 years old - that is not much! Look at the S/S Rembrandt still cruising with the same old steam turbines that were installed when the ship was new - over forty years ago. All bathrooms, piping etc has also been replaced at the QE2. I think it´s fair to view the QE2 as an almost new ship.

I really hope that Cunard will continue their efforts to keep this great ship going! And that they understand that a high age of a ship can also be something positive - like living in a really good old hotel! An old ship has atmosphere and is full of history. Something that many, many people like - especially those that don´t want to cruise in a floating casino!!

Regards,
Gripsholm

Gripsholm - I too had that conversation with Captain Warwick in 1998. What cruise were you on ?

Gripsholm, I agree with you totally - The QE2 has a long life ahead of her.

Cunard,
We was on the first crossing in July that year (actually to celebrate our wedding). The crossing was of course a wonderful experience and we hope to be back soon again.

Regards,
Gripsholm

I told it on another topic and everyone seems to agree with me , the only thing that's old on the QE2 is the hull and the rest of the outside , the inside is always changing in a refit , so she can go on for more than 30 years I believe.

Is there a crewmember or a Captain of Cunard Line here ?

Cunardcoll - We think exactly the same in regards to QE2's age

I completely agree - QE2 is not old, only her hull is 30 years old and that's why she looks so beautiful !

Gripsholm, I was on the first leg of her World Cruise that year. Miami to L.A.

It was also wonderful and the Panama Canal was a great experience.

I got to visit the bridge on this cruise.

Regards, Cunard.

Cunard....

I'm doing a R/T transatlantic later this
year which will be my first time since the
'99 refit. I am booked in Caronia and from
what Elizabeth says, I'm am eager to see
her. I try to do a R/T transatlantic every
other year and have done so since 1972. I
hope the 6-day crossings continue....the
extra day is very welcomed.
I will let you know what I think when I
return to NYC.

Just returned from the 4/20/00 QE2 Caribbean cruise New York-Miami-Caribbean-Miami. The ship is absolutely magnificent. She looks like she just came out of the shipyard as a brand new ship. When you're docked next to "ordinary" cruise ships...she's most extraordinary. However, food, service and entertainment was poor to mediocre at best. Gotta go....more tomorrow.

That's great to hear! It just re enforces what I say about QE2 having a long life ahead of her! Does any one have any photo's of the ship Today or pre 1994?

Cunard -
