We're going on the Sunbird Med cruise in June. I'd like to know if the gents usually wear tuxes or just suits on formal nights.

Thx.

It's about 50-50, I guess. For "formal" read "very smart".
I'm on there again from the 24th so I'll let you know it it's changed.
Which itinerary are you going on?

Thanks Sread. I'm going on the Med Classics and then a week on Mallorca at the Sol Club Barbados. So far I've only heard good things about the Sunbird so I'm fairly optimistic.

HI
I'VE BEEN ON 2 SUNCRUISES ON THE CAROUSEL AND EVERYONE WEARS WHATEVER THEY FEEL MOST COMFORTABLE IN.
MOST OF THE MEN WEAR SUITS ON THE FORMAL NIGHTS ALTHOUGH YOU DO GET THE OCCASIONAL FEW WHO WEAR TUXES.
I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A FAB HOLIDAY, I LOVED THE CAROUSEL AND I'VE HEARD THE SUNBIRD IS EXCELLENT.
I SEEN IT IN 1999 IN PALMA WHEN I WAS ON THE CAROUSEL AND IT LOOKS FABULOUS!!

I was also told to wear what I felt like wearing. Seems like the older (over 30) people were more dressed up than the younger ones. In those situations, I'm always more comfortable when I am "dressy" and was glad I took a long skirt and beaded jacket. My husband wore a black suit and dressy tie - only a few men wore tux's. It was kind of fun to get all decked out - we have so few chances to do that. Hope this helps.

Carolina and Liz, are you both Canadian? Is the med classics cruise including Rome or naples, as they have different names in the UK. Have you ever been to Mallorca before and do you need any advice? Feel free to ask.

Paddy.

Paddy,

Guilty as charged. I am Canadian, what gave me away? The Med Classics goes to Palma, Corsica, Rome, Pisa, Villefranche and Barcelona. This will be my first trip to Mallorca (Staying at Sol Club Barbados) so any info would be greatly appreciated.

With only one day in Villefranche I would love an opinion on what is must see in this port.

Thx.

Carolina, it was the name of the itinerary that gave you away, as well as the fact you said "eh?" in every sentence. Only joking.

Anyhoo, Mallorca is a really nice island and there really is something for everyone. The Sol Club Barbados is in Magalluf in the south of the island, where most of the action is. It is in the towns of Magalluf and its neighbour Playa de Palma that are full of clubs and entertainment, which get very busy in August. Staying in the south, Palma is the island's capital, as well as all of the Balearic Islands, and there is great shopping and the beautiful Cathedral is a must. The twice-weekly markets in Inca are a great chance to show off your bartering skills.
The northern resort of Alcudia contains a magnificent beach with a deliciously warm sea, and moving further on up, Formentor offers stunning views. If you wanna see any of the sites, i suggest you rent a car (they are quite inexpensive)and ask your holiday rep where is best. They can also provoide guided tours, which can be expensive. There are several water parks in Mallorca. Hidropark is in Alcudia, beside the Club Jupiter/Saturno/Marte Hotel, and the Aquacity, apparently Europe's biggest waterpark, is near Magalluf in Aranel. Fun for all the family.

Alternatively, you can stay and relax by the pool or in the Magalluf beach. The Sol Club Barbados has a good reputation, and as you are there in June, it shouldn't be noisy.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask or email me.
Paddy.

Paddy,
I too am Canadian!! It seems that we have the same cruise itinerary as Caroline except that we will be going in August and staying at the Riu Bonanza Park in Illetas. Is Mallorca really as hot as I have been told by some? My husband is contemplating bringing his golf clubs but...? Also is it best to take a ship excursion to Rome or do it on our own? Thanks for any info.
Liz

Hi Liz.
Mallorca is HOT. I was in Palma once and it was 42 degreesC. But that was in the city.
many hotels are air conditioned and at the coastal resorts it is very pleasant, but do bring your sun screen and a hat. One more point about Mallorca, while the language is spanish, it is the Catalan dialect, so any Spanish speakers may be a little confused, but everyone speaks English anyway

I was in Rome with Airtours/Sunquest cruises three years ago, and we could either see the Collosium and the Vatican, or the sistine chapel. We took the Vatican tour, which is all day including lunch, and got a fab day and a great guide, and also got to see other sights like the Roman Forum. If you wanna see the three main attractions, you will have to do it yourself, but our excursion was wonderful. And do remember, the Sistine Chapel trip is a full day as you have to queue for a long time where there is no shade, and Rome gets very hot in the summer.

Enjoy your trip, and what dates are you going?
Paddy.

One more point about Mallorca, while the language is spanish, it is the Catalan dialect, so any Spanish speakers may be a little confused, but everyone speaks English anyway. As far as I know there are some brilliant golf courses on the island, so the clubs may be a good idea, but you could just as easily rent some without them cluttering up you cabin and taking some of your airline baggage allowance.

Hi Paddy!
We cruise Aug.12-19 (Corsica, Rome, Livorno, Villefranche, Barcelona) and then Mallorca (Illetas)from Aug. 19-26. Any other suggestions of tours to do would be appreciated. You mentioned very hot temperatures but is it humid or dry? Thanks, Liz

Liz, the heat in Mallorca is generally nice and dry, but in the center of Palma midafternoon, it can be quite insufferable.

The only tours I would take is to Rome and Pisa (from Livorno). The guides are superb and it is made easy for you as the ports are quite far from the two cities. I haven't been to Corsica, but my friends stopped there on the IslandBreeze and said the best thing was to use public transport and taxis. Villefrance is very nice itself, but I would advise you to take a train to Nice and Monaco. The trainstation there is very near the port (remember that you must use a tender there - great fun). And you practically dock in the centre of Barcelona. Again, see it yourself. The Las Ramblas with all its cafes and shops along the promenade is very interesting and great to relax, and if you can take a taxi or bus to La Sagrada Familia Cathedral by Gaudi - very beautiful.
