I've been on a lot of HAL ships.
My favorite of the modern fleet is the Maasdam because she has the best interiors.
My overall favorite is the Nieuw amsterdam of 1938. She was the most beautiful ship ever built.

Which HAL-ship of the past 127 years do you like the best ?.

Bernard....

I cannot speak for as far back as 127 years, although sometimes it feels like I've been around forever!!!!!

Favourite HAL ship? For me,it has to be the new ROTTERDAM VI....I think I know every nook and cranny. However,I am sailing on the MAASDAM in May and my curiosity has been peaked by your statement about the interiors.
I will let you know my views on that ship when I return,if you like.

I will be sailing the rotterdam VI in three weeks for a transatlantic crossing.

I've sailed the Maasdam last year for a baltic cruise. She has the best showlounge and Atrium of the 4 sisters. The crow's nest decor is great. I'm sure that you will have a great time on the Maasdam.

Bernard, The Netherlands.

I have been on the Ryndam and Volendam. I prefer the Ryndam. Over all,I think the necor is nicer on the Ryndam. The layouts of the public areas are in the same locations on both ships, but their layouts are slightly different. I liked the Ryndam better, but both ships are nice.

Bernard.....

I traveled on all of the post-war fleet with the exception of the Princes Margriet.
It is difficult to say which is my favorite,
but I think Rotterdam V. I loved the Nieuw
Amsterdam of '38 too. Of the modern fleet
I like the Maasdam and the Rotterdam VI. I
have not sailed Volendam yet. The Nieuw
Amsterdam of '38 was my very first ship and
so holds a special place.....not to mention
her beauty.

favorite Holland America ship? EASY...the STATENDAM of 1929, one of the most perfect ships ever...gorgeous lines externally, photographed beautifully from every and any angle, glorious public rooms, huge cabins... For my affections, she just edges out the NIEUW AMSTERDAM of 1938, which is also among my top 20 favorite ships/class of ship. I also have a special fondness for the NOORDAM and ZAANDAM of 1938. I also don't dismiss te woderful combiships to the North Pacific, the DIEMERDRK and DINTELDYK...beautiful, comfortable ships...Of the present fleet I love the new ROTTERDAM, which I think has a slight edge over the STATENDAM of 1992, which, with the exception of Hapag Lloyd's EUROPA of 1981, was heretofore my favorite of the ships in service in the 90's.

Well, I guess I am certainly in the minority. You guys all like the more modern ships, but my favorite is the Westerdam. I like the layout because most of the shops and services are on the same deck. Those other ships make me crazy with their three deck atriums. I never can remember where I am.

And the walking deck was all outside, even in the bow. In the stern, I got to walk past the pool and the steel drum band on every lap. It was fun.

It seemed like the staterooms were a little bigger, too. We just got back from a cruise on the Veendam, and maybe it was my imagination, but the cabin seemed smaller to me. I was always stepping on my husband. The Westerdam seemed bigger.

However, I love cruising HAL and am looking forward to my next one. So many ships, so little time! :-)
