Has anyone else seen photos or the model of the new ships to be built in the U.S. for United States Lines? How disappointing. Its a shame that the first liners to be built in the US in over 40 years are so ugly. I have posted two photos of a model of the new ships here:

Yeah huh...the bow could use some beautifying. What's the passenger capacity gonna be...the model seems to not have enough lifeboats.

There's probably more than enough lifeboat capacity ... because who would want to go on such a character-less, uninspiring ship as this? Looks like the designers have lost the battle with the "pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap" bean-counters.

I use a large photo of "THE" United States as my desktop. I think she's gorgeous!
I also think this new model is beautiful as well as the Grand Princess and the Voyager and the Millenium and the etc., etc., etc...

Ha, after I saw the photo, make me very afraid...about lifeboats. I am very interesting to know this ship's facts. I just have this comment to this design ~ SO CHEAP, UGLY. I think they should change the design of the newbuilding.......so cheap!!!

The reason their are so few lifeboats is that these two ships are classed as Coastal Vessels rather than deep sea passenger ships.

Therefore, they are not required to carry the same number of lifeboats but do indeed have more than adequate life saving capacity between the boats and liferafts.

I think if you see the 72,000grt cruise ship just have total eight lifeboats. I think you will not travel by this ship. Right?

Although this cruise ship how beautiful, how expensive, I must not travel with this ship ever!!!

Unquestionably, undeniably an unattractive vessel to say the least (that's putting it nicely). William Francis Gibbs is turning over in his grave. It looks like the shipbuilding industry is now in the same "floating box" rut that the American auto industry was in during the '80's.

I agree, skyej, it is a shame that this is the best we could do. Then again, we did elect Bill Clinton to the Presidency as well, so what would you expect from the good folks who brought you Slick Willy?

Economy of design is the byword of cruise lines today. To squeeze as much usable passenger space as possible onto the smallest possible hull is the method to maximize profit. In tranquil waters this will and has worked. But I see the day will come when one of these floating tubs gets caught by a fast moving catastrophic storm. With no fosile to speak of and the superstructure built over the fantail, buoyancy is at a minimum.
The way to weather such a storm as sea, is to turn the bow into the wind. The current crop of ships will not have the buoyancy to stop the forward plunge before the water reaches the bridge. I know that every possible precaution is taken to insure against such an event. But it is not the forseen events but the unforseen, the once in a lifetime storm, that will be the undoing of this attitude.

Hello everybody,

Please wait...let us find some good points about this ship. Because if the designer go to this message board, I think he/she will very sad and want to cry..hahaha!

I like this ship's swimming pool. It seems big. I also like more balcony, but in this ship, TOO MANY! The funnel also very colourful.

Well, when the first thing that hit me was the bow... Where is it?! I don't know if I'm using the right terms, but I think that the bow should be much more longer.
And what's the massive shed on IT (not her)? There's only one word to describe this ship: a box!!! Maximum passenger capacity; maximum ugliness!!! Makes me think of Grand Princess... Don't actually know which one is uglier.

When I see this picture my immediate response is "Cargo". People cargo to be exact. Economies of scale are indeed important, but what happened to creativity? This ship does not look appealing, because it looks like a giant people mover. I still don't understand the concept of so few lifeboats...this vessel will not be cruising up the Mississippi, it will be traveling across vast oceans. I can't see this ship as a coastal vessel. I hope they're not making the mistake where they feel the ship "IS" the lifeboat...that mistake has been made before, and people are still talking about it.

Are they really going to put rainbow like band at the water line and on the bottom of the funnel because that looks so 1980's, and what is with that funnel ? The United States Line had a trade mark with there funnels and when you seen a red white and blue funnel you knew that it was an American ship. These ships were said to be the rebuilding of American pride and with that said I was hoping these ships would be designed with an ocean liner look and feel and yet give a person a cruise fit for a king. All I see is a floating hotel sailing under a cruise line name that used to be something. I never had a high opinion of these ships when I learned that after these ships enter service that American Hawaiian Cruises will be discontinued and the SS Independence scrapped.

My, that is an ugly ship. The first thing that came to my mind was a "car carrier" like the ferries that go between Helsinki and Stockholm and carry people and cars. Even they look better.

Hey Brandon, you want to see a ship as it should look? Look at this:

The bottom line is, the new US lines ship is a brick.

P.S. No offense, skyej. Yours is pretty nice as modern designs go. I'm just a little partial to classic designs.
