Evidently a 20 year old man fell overboard (03:00 a.m.) on Feb. 5th and the coast guard picked him up two hours later. He was still treading water. He was on the Nordic Empress.

Crew members claimed that they spotted a man in a restricted area of the ship's bow, but he had disappeared by the time they approached the area.

Concerned that the man fell overboard, the crew woke up the nearly 2400 passengers and employees on board to conduct a head count to determine if anyone was missing.

Here's the story as reported in tonight's Cruise News....

From our...another bad idea from the movie "Titanic" file... a 20-year old passenger was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after falling overboard from a location near the bow of Royal Caribbean's Nordic Empress. According to Coast Guard officials the passenger, Erick Angel of Phoenix was rescued by helicopter early in the morning last Saturday about 12 miles northwest of St. Thomas. At the time of the rescue it was estimated that he had spent more than two hours in the water.

Exactly how he fell overboard was not clear, but some crew members said that they had spotted a man in the restricted area near the ship's bow around 3:00 am. When they could not find anyone in the area they sounded the alarm and began waking up the 2,400 passengers to determine if anyone was missing. The search was initiated as soon as it became clear that a passenger was missing. Mr. Angel suffered minor injuries as a result of his fall.

Now, how does someone go about falling off a ship?! The rails around the decks are chest-high to me. I'd be interested to find out what that guy's bar bill was...

Usha - Right on, he must have been intoxicated as there is no way I know of(unless your 7 feet tall) to 'fall' off a ship. He must have been 'flying high.'

Well he WAS king of the world.
The bow of a ship at night to me is a pretty scary place. It's pitch black, windy, open sea ahead, I wouldn't spend too much time there. During the day though it's a favorite spot.

If nobody pushed him he should be banned from cruising on that cruise line. AND he should be charged a Coast Guard Fee!
This kind of thing is not funny to me. The guy could have mentally retarded or something, but if this was the case, who was supposed to be watching him? Who bought him the ticket? Somebody should pay. I can just see myself on the waking up end of some clown who can't control his drinking in the middle of the night. I have heard where the cruise ship actually returned to the previous port during the search efforts of some idiot drunk who fell off the ship while trying to urinate over the edge.

Usha, you said exactly what I was thinking. 20 year old man at 3am - he must have been trollied!!!

Silly boy - hope he wont do that again in a hurry. Thats if he is allowed back on a ship again. What a waste of resources, time and money!!!

Persons are mentally handicapped or challenged. Also there seems to be a rush to justice here. Why not wait for more informed input.

Can you imagine all the different stories we would be hearing now had no one noticed him last standing at the bow.

I agree with Topgun! I certainly do not think any of us would want to face a jury with this kind of thinking.

Personally, I would say that it is almost impossible for a lone person to fall of a ship unless:

1. They were doing something potentially dangerous, like sitting on the rail

2. Or they jumped

I will await the evidence, as to why they would do either of the above.

An intoxicated passenger fell off a Carnival ship a few years ago. Turns out he was standing on the rail and "relieving himself." The ship failed to find him, but he swam ashore.
