If you have ever booked a cruise and used run of ship can you please share your experiences with me? Was it a good way to book your cruise and take your chances on a cabin? Or is it better to pick out your specific cabin upon reserving the cruise? Pros and cons would be really helpful. Thanks!

It really depends whether you want the surprise, which could be a nice one or not so nice depending on what you get. It also depends on whether you want to choose where you want to be on the ship. Honestly, there are people who would do run of the ship all the times and take the gamble and people like me who like to choose their cabin. It's honestly your choice but you still get the same cruise.

I agree with Phil. It depends if you want to roll the dice or not. From what I hear, it generally works out as a plus. Unfortunatly we always seem to only be able to cruise during holiday periods when the cruise lines don't do this. We did it once on Carnival and it worked out great! We got upgraded big time. First time we got to see the water out of a real window!! A little scary at first but we got used to it real fast

Thanks for the advice! We're booked on the VOTS sailing during the March Break. And we booked run of ship. I figured the ship was large enough that there are really no "bad" cabins. We got an amazing deal going run of ship so we couldn't pass it up! Since it's during a "holiday" season, I imagine there won't be any empty window/balcony cabins left. : (

Okay, then Joe or anyone, is there a difference between guaranteed and run of the ship? This should be interesting.

Run of the Ship: The cruise line will assign a cabin of their choice, from the lowest grade (inside, bunks if so equipped) to a full suite.
Guarantee: The pax will set a limit that the cruise line will not go below. For example: 1) a guarantee of price-you pay $800 and they will provide a cabin for that price so matter what grade. 2)a guarantee of an outside cabin-they may assign an outside, balcony or suite BUT not an inside.
I hope this will help. I once took a guarantee and ended up with an inside cabin several decks below the waterline, but that was quite a while back!

when do you find out exactly which cabin you're assigned when you book run of ship?

One agent told us you find out when you check in , but I find this a little too uneasy! Another one said that she could call ahead of time and get RCCL to tell her which cabin was assigned. Which one is it???

Is there a chance of upgrading the cabin they give you for a small fee on the spot??

THANKS!

Tonan,

I just booked "run of ship" about 3 weeks before sailing with NCL. I got a good inside price and I don't spend much time looking out the window anyway. My agent told me she could find my cabin number about a week in advance. I am sailing Monday and received my cabin number yesterday, 5 days in advance. I got a slight upgrade (inside) in the center of the ship which is my preference for stability. Of my nine cruises this is my fourth "run of ship" and if you get a good price and expect the lowest accomidations, you can only move up. If the cabin is comfortable I am happy as I use it mostly for sleeping, showering, and changing clothes. Two of the upgrades were outside but I have always been pleased with my cabin.

Enjoy your cruise.

Tonan; I think it depends on the sailing date, as I've found out my cabin # several weeks before in some cases; but in others it was assigned at the dock. We were showing as TBA (to be assigned) on the final manifest sent to the pier, and the accomodation purser actually allocated the cabin space. The ships always have a few cabin left empty; perhaps to accomodate repair crews who may be necessary at the last minute, or for space should a cabin become unusable during the trip due to plumbing or other problems. Some times you luck out, and get a rather good cabin at the last minute. On Holland America we got a larger superior outside (Noordam), on Crown Princess a balcony, and on Star Princess top catagory just one down from a mini suite. However, if you are not prepared to accept the minimum grade, don't book a run of the ship, as that is what you could end up with!

Tonan: Seems like your getting alot of info so I will throw mine in and what has been my experiences. What I know of run of the ship is that NCL has run of the ship inside and run of the ship outside. They will put you in a room from the bottom to the top if it be outside you stay outside the same with inside. You can also book a catagory guarentee which guarentees you that cat or above. We have done this on HAL, Costa, Rccl, NCL In 11 cruises booking a catagory guarentee we have gotten upgraded everytime once our daughter got her own room. Sometimes not very far up others all the way up. I believe it will help if you book early as some of the lines upgrade by when you booked. It is easy to understand that the lines will sell more lower cat. rooms that the top of the line ones so the earlier on the list the better. As they over sell you move up. We usually do not book maybe two months in advance and have gotten upgraded. We also go to the costumer service desk at embarkation and ask if there is anything better sometimes there is a fee to go even higher but not much if you are going outside to outside ...
We leave next week and have for the first time done the run of the ship so it should be very interesting.
Kevin

We do run of ship all the time. Because we're on a budget, we always go with inside cabins, so run of ship is great for us. (We hardly spend any time in the cabin anyway, so it doesn't bother us to be inside.) We're booked on VOTS for the end of February, and did run of ship again. We booked back in October, and just got our documents in last week. We were upgraded to the highest category available for inside cabins! And, we have our room assignments 3 weeks before sailing! We've got rooms all around us, we shouldn't have noise problems. I'm very happy with run of ship. We've never had a problem with it.
