From Andrew Fieldings forum:-
"Posted by San Jose Denise on January 03, 19100 at 17:21:39:

We paid over $800 per person ABOVE the standard
($1,100)cruise rate to sail on Sun Cruises,
Carousel Millenium cruise and it was a DISASTER!!
The entire itinerary was wrong, we never got to see
Jamaica (either the boat did not pass the customs
inspection or did not pay the docking fee)
MANY passengers endured broken plumbing and raw
sewage in the cabins, the crew was most unpleasant,
especially with the American Passengers, and out
of the 3 land tours we purchased all three had to
be fully refunded for lack of quality, or unable
to complete (left on broken bus in Grand Caymen
for 2 hours)not to mention the Jamaica tour
we could not take since the boat U-turned from
that port 1/2 hour after reaching Jamaica.

This is just the tip of the iceburg!

I VERY STRONGLY ADVISE you DO NOT book
with Sun Trips / Sun Cruises / Air Tours."

Here's another view of the same trip from our reader's reviews at http://www.travelpage.com/yourfav/yourfav_cruise.htm

MV Carousel

Your Rating: One Star
Reviewed by: L. Downey
# previous cruises: 2
Date of Trip: December 25, 1999
Itinerary: Caribbean

This cruise isn't worthy of even a single star. A catalogue of disaster from start to finish. This was booked as a "Millennium Cruise" to take in five different Caribbean ports. We didn't even make it to Jamaica which would have been the highlight of the week - still waiting for the full explanation from Airtours. To sum up - the ship was shoddy, entertainment abysmal, food bland and service appalling. More than 800 passengers signed up to register their discontent with the cruise. I will never travel with this company again.

Some of the main areas smelt of sewage - we believe there were some on-going sanitation problems. The ship was probably last refurbished in the seventies. The pool was aimed for the kids on board - very small and not suitable for swimming in. Casino OK - bit dingy. The main lounges were very old fashioned.

Buffet breakfast and lunch meant huge queues for mediocre fare. Sit down breakfast was much better. Evening meal was European bland food - sounding far better on the menu than it looked or tasted. No Caribbean options available at all. Ordering drinks was a battle - you often had to ask three or four times before you received them.

We had a standard outside cabin on B deck - it was tiny. It was, however, functional enough for two people - but I dread to think what it was like with four in there! Shower very small - larger passengers must have struggled. Only plus point was that it was quite quiet.

Shows were poor. One night there was a juggler on - not our idea of a fun night on a cruise ship! Comedian was quite funny but the jokes were definitely British ones and I think a lot of the humour was lost on the Americans and Canadians on board which was a shame. On New Year's Eve the show was based around songs from famous musicals and wasn't really very "special" considering the fact it was 31.12.99.

We stopped at four of the five scheduled ports. Not one excursion booked on ship went to plan. Most people got their money back or a proportion of it for the tours. I would not recommend booking any tours on board if you are unfortunate enough to be going on this ship.

The fellow passengers were what made this miserable week worthwhile. We met some lovely people from the US and Canada whom we hope to keep in touch with. There was a great mix of Brits, Americans and Canadians and despite everyone's notable disappointment with the cruise we all seemed to get along really well.

Very sad to read what a disaster the former Nordic Prince has become. We used to LOVE going to Bermuda on her.

I was on this ship in August 98 and i LOVED her. Why oh why did Airtours, for the want of a better word, **** this ship up? Bad, Airtours, BAD!!!

As for Natalie, she is due back from her cruise on the Carousel today (Saturday 8th Jan). I hope it wasn't as bad as L. Downey's cruise as I told her I found it to be fab. Natalie, if you read this post before you read the email I am about to send you, I am so sorry if you had a bad vacation.

We sailed Sundream january 99 and Sunbird Dec 99. I believe Sundream and Carousel were sister ships with RCCL.I would give both ships passing marks based on our experience and would normally have sailed with Airtours again. Some things are obviously wrong, and I remember that the air conditioning on Sundream was down for about 24 hours. Also on Sunbird some things did look tatty. This with the comments coming in indicate that the operator may be running the ship on a shoestring and bypassing routine maintenance.

On the subject of food and entertainment I believe that an American would find it below par compared to ships out of the US. The quantities of food are less and prepared differently. The entertainment definitely had to be understood. With 60/70% of the passengers being British jokes etc were slanted to their taste. A lot I could not understand.
I am not protecting Air Tours but trying to set part of the record straight.
All things aaside, they had better get their act together without delay.

The Sunbird and Sundream are not sister ships, the Sundream is the old Song of America a much better ship.

Sundream is the old Song of Norway. For a complete list of the Airtours fleet visit http://www.travelpage.com/cruise/airtours.htm .

You can also see what happened to the former RCL ship (and any other fleet for that matter) by looking under "former ships" on our RCL page at http://www.travelpage.com/cruise/rcl.htm .

The ratings for the ships discussed here are normally quite high, Airtours from UK and Sunquest from Canada, I don't know the companies from other countries. To cruise these ships is not as expensive as the P&O Cunard etc etc. I have sailed on Carousel before and it has been fabulous. I don't expect top names in entertainment as I would from the ships I have mentioned, but the service should be about the same.

It seems to me that so many things went wrong with that New Year cruise that there may well have been some sort of unrest among the employees. Just not that many things can go wrong in one week.....ummmmm

For 800 or so people to complain before the end of the cruise is incredible that is why I think this may have been the problem. I would not be surprised if there is a completely new staffing for this next cruise with no problems at all. Staff are paid a dreadful wage, and can be away from their families for 6 months or more....maybe they were unhappy? Just seems odd...so many problems.

I am sailing on Sunbird later today, and looking forward to this very much, the reviews have been good, I just hope that the crew from the recent Carousel have not been transfered to Sunbird today!!!!!!!

Anyway I will write a review on my return, and hopefully it will be all good!!!!!!

Bye for a couple of weeks!!

Hi there, just returned from the Carousel yesterday. Yes the Carousel is stilling having problems with her pumps, but all being said I had an excellent time. The food, service and cabin was excellent. We didnt go to the shows as the Casino was open most nights. We went to all ports apart from Roatan Bay as the pumps still had to be emptied but I needed the day to sunbathe so I wasnt bothered. Honduras is a bit dissappointing so anyone going please book an excursion otherwise it is not worth going off the ship. The ship is old now and you can tell that from the carpets, furniture etc. There were alot of Americans and Canadians aboard the ship and they were the ones complaining (about everything!!). We wanted a value for money ship with good food and wine and a good time and we got it!!!!!

Natalie , it's me again . I just posted a reply to your message on another topic before I read this message . What do you mean the pumps were not working ? What pumps ? Why did this prevent you from going to Roatan ? I'm really looking forward to all the ports of call and would be very disappointed to miss any of them . Do you recommend any peticular tours for Honduras ? What tours did the other passengers enjoy on all of the ports ? What kind of food did they serve at dinner ? What were some of your favourite meals that you had ? Is it true that the currency aboard ship is American ? How much did the wine , beer , and cocktails cost ? How was the pool and the pool deck ? How were the midnight buffets ? Please help , leaving soon .
Thank You , Kelly

For starters do NOT lump Canadians and Americans together, we are very different. However I am sure the complaints were made for good reason. I am British but have lived in Canada for 25 years and I can say this as I go home at least twice a year, what you accept as good we frequently do not. You stated the ship was old, the carpets worn, that would not be what I expected. If you accept third rate, fine but I definitely dont, however I pay a decent price and get a decent product.

I was actually a passenger on the much talked about Carousel cruise over Christmas and New Year. All I can say is that it was a total nightmare and that the complaints made by all parties were completely justified. I'm from the UK and used to budget holidays and "making do" however, this was my very worst holiday experience ever. I can't think of one thing that that ghastly ship and its crew got right during the week that I was there. Sewage in the cabins, missed ports and rude crew members made it an unforgettable experience for all the wrong reasons.

You people who are complaining about the Carousel are really annoying me. I have been on 2, 2 week cruises on the Carousel and I loved it. You try sailing a ship that big 50 weeks of the year without any problems! I was last on the ship in August and the entertainment, food and cabins were excellent. I want to be an entertainer when I leave school and I would love to work on the Carousel. All you passengers have to realise that Suncruises do not say they are a 5 star cruise company they say they are an affordable holiday. And as for them being unfriendly to the American passengers I don;t think so I met American's on both cruises and they loved the crew,if they were unfriendly is it any wonder have you just read what you have wrote about them? You probably showed you didn't like them on board. If you want to complain to me my e-mail is hairbush@genie.co.uk

Me again,

Yes one of the pumps was out of action which made the ship list coming into Honduras. The captain explained the reason for not stopping at Roatan Bay as they had to have more time sorting and getting rid of the stuff in the pumps.

The meals during the day were a help yourself outsideon the Lido Deck . Breafast was english breakfasts, or ommlettes, cereal, fruit or toast. Lunch was salad, cold meats, chips, rice etc. with pork, bbq ribs, steak, pasta etc etc. Also fresh fruit.

You could go in the al la carte restaurant for breakfast and lunch which is more formal and you choose from a menu.

Evening meals were lovely. Normally five courses, starter, soup, salad, main course and pudding. Too much food to mention!!!

Kelly if you want my email address to find out more:

Jenkins@unrealqueen.freeserve.co.uk

Sorry about the comment about USA/Canadians. No offence intended but they were the only ones not overly happy with the ship. As fae

I'm going on the Carousel in a couple of weeks and I'm going to keep an open mind . When ever I'm on vacation I always go with the flow , vacations are not meant to be stressful . How bad could escaping winter and have people serving you almost 24hrs a day be ?
I hope the Carousel has ironed out some of the kinks by the time I board , I can take anything that comes my way except the smell of sewage . I hope I can join those of you that really enjoyed the ship , I'll let you know in a few weeks !!!

Although very strongly worded, I am afraid I have to agree with POOLBAR. I have done Carousel and Seawing and know many people who have sailed all the Airtours fleet and I have never heard a complain. No I am lying: we sat with people on the Carousel at dinner and 2 of the 5 hated it. 3 of them cruised Seawing the previous year and knew waht to expect. They had all cruised Dawn Princess 2 months before the Carousel and were expecting too much.

Not everybody can afford the likes of RCI and Cunard etc. and that is who Airtours are pitched at. If you are lucky enough to afford this, go with that. It has to be said that most of Sun Cruises customers who go on Packages with Airtours to the Costas and Canaries, and they are used to and like that environment. On the other hand, the Millennium cruise does seem like a one off, but can be explained by the lack of extra staff and maintenance crew, and those on board wanting to be celebrating at home with their families. But at the Millennium prices people should have been given the excellent service I find from Airtours at summer.

Natalie, remember good old topgun and the free but worthless advice. Please dont lump us Canadians together with Americans just because we are on the same continent. We are different. Americans do at times seem to be agressive and objectionable when in groups. Get to know them as individuals and they are in the main really nice people.

I too have sailed with Airtours, aboard SEAWING for a 19 night sailing from the Canaries to Cyprus. My cruise experience is not limited to the less expensive lines, as I have sailed P&O, Cunard and most North American based lines. The secret is to know what to expect, seen through realistic eyes; do not expect a Rolls Royce ride in an economy car! I found Airtour's Sun Cruises to be of exceptional value for the money spent, and would have no hesitation on sailing with them again.
