Haven't sailed with them; however, I noted their enticing advertisements and consulted with my travel agent on a cruise for winter 2000. She indicated that she would book the cruise if I wanted; but, she did not recommend it.

Please check further Darlene. Travel Agents hate Renaissane because they prefer direct bookings with the passengers and don't pay much of a commission. Fortunately our travel agent is reputable and when asked about the R1 she told us the feedback had been very positive. She wa correct and it was an outstanding land/cruise in every respect!! Unfortunately I won't have a chance to sail to Tahiti for many years.
Renaissance does have strict cancellation guidelines but you get a first-class cruise for less than a first class price. Purchase travel insurance and whatever cruise you choose, have a glorious time.

My wife and I just returned from the trip to Tahiti on the R3 and in general it was awesome. There was very little time at sea (during the night only) and we spent a maximum amount of time snorkeling and viewing the flora and fauna. The cabins are very nice on decks 6 and 7 but even nicer on 8. The food was very good and the specialty restaurants were fine, althought we prefer eating in the main dining room. The ship is very much up to date (we toured the bridge and were very impressed with the redundent safety features) and it has a nice touch of class on all the decks. The library is excellent with many recently published books. The weather is hot and muggy and it rains at least once every day. The dress is shorts and thongs but they ask you to wear long pants to dinner. Could be improved with less time in Papeete but the other islands were great

Contacted a travel agent regarding the R3 in Tahiti & he did not recommend Renaissance. He inferred that they were having financial problems & possibly going out of business. Does anyone know if this is true? The Tahiti cruise sounds great, I would love to give it a try.

Sounds more like a travel agent who has some sour grapes over the fact that Renaissance doesn't pay commissions to agents. How could the line be going out of business when it's got 4 new ships in service (well, I'm not totally sure the R4 is in service yet) and a 5th on the way?

captb-
You need to change travel agents -- this one doesn't sound entirely reputable. Sounds as if he/she is only interested in a commission and not steering you toward the best vacation at an affordable price.

captb: as indicted in my reply posted on 10-24-99, my travel agent would not recommended Renissance. Although I didn't note that the reason was due to financial difficulties, it's interesting to note that your travel agent indicated the same reason as mine. Either we have the same agent, or the word on the street might have some merit???

Renaissance does pay commission - it is a flat rate which seldom equals the usual percentage commission paid by other cruise lines. Unfortunately, the line has been virtually black balled by travel agents for this. But, a good agent should know better than to simply refuse to book the line because of this. Cruise people try a variety of lines, and an agent that is really good at the job will know this and not risk losing a good client just because the return is not as generous. But please beware when you purchase insurance, a lot of travel insurance companies now refuse to cover Renaissance because of their very strict cancellation policies.

After intensive research I have found that Renaissance Cruises is a quality line that offers a top-notch product for the best value you'll find....period. While their cancellation policies are rather strict, they are very candid about advising that you purchase travel insurance and even recommend insurance companies as well as telephone numbers. I am booked on the R3 in Tahiti next May and can't wait to go! The fact that Renaissance Cruises new R series ships were voted #4 in Conde Nast Travel Magazine large ship category only serves to reinforce my enthusiasm. If you have any questions about the quality of Renaissance, just listen to past customers - not travel agents. There you have it.
