Anyone

This is a stupid question but one that I have been thinking about for a long time but "How much do second hand Cruise ships go for?"

For instance Song of America was sold to Airtours what would it have cost to buy the ship?

I'm not thinking of buying one to park at the local dock but just have a small curiosity to such matters.

Cheers

Garry

Hi Garrys - yes, it is kind of a stupid question but so what - HAL sold the Nieuw Amsterdam to American Classic Voyages for $114.5 million. Little expensive for my pocket book.
Sorry Garry - that really wasn't a stupid question - guess it was too early in the morning when I wrote it!!
Malcolm - that's a good question and I don't have the answer. I only knew the answer to the above from reading HAL'S Press Release.
Wonder if anyone out there knows the answer to your question.
I believe they sell the ships privately and not by auction.

That's an interesting question. Now I'm curious. I DO know how much a NEW ship costs. I just read the Celebrity's new ship Millennium I, will cost $350 million. How do they sell old ships? At Auction? Private sales?

That's not a stupid question...its a great question. Now i've got a stupid question about exchange rates! No, it's not how many dollars are there to the pound. How many cruise ships to the jumbo jet? In other words: what is worth more, a Cruise ship (say Voyager) or a Jumbo Jet (747)?

I don't have any exact figures, but I would imagine that a ship costs a good deal more than a 747. I think I can remember seeing a 747 figure running somewhere around $175 to $200 million. With the Grand Princess having cost over $450 million, do the arithmetic. But as I said, I'm not completely sure as to the 747 figures.

What makes more revenue- the 747 or cruise liner?

500pax on 18 1hr flights every day, each paying an average of $600?
or
3000 pax every week each paying an average of $6000?

Remember the money pax spend on drinks and on board shopping etc.

Paddy, of course 'Airtours' operates both Cruise Ships and Areoplanes. They 'coin' it both ways!

I remember reading that some international flights do not make big profits in themselves- it is the sale of 'duty free' goods onboard and at the Airports, and Airport food which is the real money spinner. I'm sure that Cruise ships rely on the sales of drinks, photo's, shopping, gambeling and excursions etc to put the icing on their cake, too.

I read that one of the biggest revenue generating processes in the travel industry is upgrade supplements. You pay around £2000 each way to upgrade to First on British Airways (transatlantic), and on Airtours Sunbird, the upgrade to a Suite cost more than the normal cost!

It is true that a huge proportion of cruise lines money is generated from excursions, drinks, casinos etc. That is why thay sell last minute deals so cheap - although they get little profit on the cabin, people spend huge amounts on board without realizing. My own bill for three in 1998 for a week amounted to over £700.

Damned cashless society!!!!!!!

One more thing, when I ws on Airtours Seawing a few years ago, we sat with the first engineer and his family from wales. He mentioned that Airtoursd bout the 1971 built Southward for £22million.

I think 747's are in the $250 million to $300 million range. My way to visualize a billion dollars is to remember seeing 4 United Airlines 747's parked in a row at SFO.

Hi..most ship sales are probably done through brokers who specialize in shipping. It's a very old business.
