I read in the letters page of one of yesterdays' newspapers that instead of calling their new ship Queen Mary 2, Cunard should call it Diana, Princess of Wales. Part of me quite likes this idea as I quite liked her, but is it just my imagination or is this just really tacky? And would it appeal to Cunard's target passenger: the conservative retired couple, who may have seen Diana as a trouble maker? What do you all think? I personally would call her Queen Victoria, as they had wanted to call the original Queen Elizabeth

I think that the Queen Victoria would be a good name for the new ship or Britannia! After Cunards first ship back in 1840. I can't wait to see her. I am sure it will be glorious! They better include a Palm Court and a Smoking Room! What do you think of that? To reacall the ocean liners of yore!

From tonight's Cruise News....

A number of rumors surfaced this week related to Cunard's Queen Mary project. One report said that Cunard had already placed an order for the new ship with the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Germany. This is not true. While the shipyard will be re-furbishing three of Cunard's current fleet this fall, it has not been selected to build the new vessel. Additionally, the British newspaper The Mail on Sunday incorrectly reported that the new ship's name would be Queen Mary II. Industry sources tell us the ship's name will actually be Queen Mary 2, (i.e. the second ship to bear that name) just as Cunard's other liner is Queen Elizabeth 2 rather than Queen Elizabeth II.

Personally I think that Queen Victoria would probably be shortened to Queen Vic, and thats the name of a 1000 pubs not a stately Ocean Liner. Queen Mary 2 sounds just fine to me. Maybe I am a sceptic but do you really think it will ever be built?? It would be absolutely marvellous if it is, but I will believe it when I see it in the flesh...

I think that they should build her first and worry about the name later!

The original Queen Mary was just know as 'Hull 534' until she was christened/launched by the ruling monarch.

I too will believe it when I see it...

Scottylass! You should know that Queen Vic would fill this glorious ship with fans of one of the most depressing shows in the world: EastEnders. We could have frank Butcher as captain, Jamie Mitchell as cabin steward, Dr. Leg as the ship's doctor, Rosa diMarco as catering manageress, Steve owen as entertainments manager, Mark fowler as retail manager (all those years on the market must have given him some skills!), maybe even Peggy Mitchell as PA organiser. Just imagine, that awful voice on the tannoy every 5 seconds asking "Woss goin' on, Phil?"

Not with Cunard, my dear, not with Cunard.

Paddy,

You gave me a laugh this morning - about the Queen Vic, I am afraid I stopped watching Eastenders back in the Den and Angie era, how long ago was that? But I do know that its a pretty depressing show, but your description was so funny giving them all jobs on the ship. However, talking about television, if you seen the celebrities Holiday program last night, one of the current characters from Eastenders (I cannot even remember his name) did have some real good taste, because he chose to come to good old Scotland for his holiday.....back to the topic, does anyone know if, when and where will the QM2 be built?? What happened to the chap that posted on this site saying he had some insider knowledge??? I forget his name!!
