My husband & I will sail on our first cruise on the Norway Jazz Cruise, Western Caribbean, 10/23. We just received our packet on excursions & are slightly overwhelmed. We will visit Cozumel & Ocho Rios, Jamaica. I read the postings on beaches in Cozumel -- they were very helpful; but, what about the other sites. There is a trip to Cichen Itza. It's 11 hours -- 7 hours on the bus just getting there & back: Is it worth it? What about seeing Ocho Rios via the bike tour (Dunn River Falls Bicycle Tour)? Do you have to be a tri-athlete to enjoy it?

Any and all comments will be most helpful!

I would definitely go see Dunns River Falls, but not by bike. The Jamaicans are very pushey about asking for handouts and selling their wares, and the more you can avoid them, the better off you are. Jamaica can be very dangerous, so stay with tours and do not go off on your own. I don't want to be an alarmist, but I have been there and it is a place to be very careful. Enjoy!

I agree with jbrobb - go with the ship's tours. Even then you never know. One time when we were in Jamaica the bus driver took off from Dunn's River Falls and left the group stranded. Thank goodness we were not on the bus. Me, I would stay on the ship - after the last trip there I vowed I would never get off the ship.
Forget about the bus ride to "chicken pizza" as everyone call Chichen Itza. You would be so exhausted. Usually they fly the passengers up to the ruins. A shorter trip is to Tulum, but even then it's not worth it unless you really like ruins. It is very, very hot in these two places. Go snorkelling or just walk around town and have a beer or two.
Enjoy your cruise.

For you first trip to Mexico I would do
Chankanaab Park-it is a wonderful archeological, botanical and snorkeling park with changing areas, showers, lockers, restaurants and bars. The archeological park will give you a flavor of the Mayan culture. There is also a small ruin site on Cozumel called (I think) the San Gervaiso ruins. If you become interested in the ruin sites (like we did) you will most likely plan a land based vacation (like we did) to the Yucatan and then you will have time to go to Tulum, Chichen Itza, the Blue Cenote, Xel-Ha. We intend to go back as we didn't have enough time to really explore Chichen Itza and we would like to visit Coba, Uxmal and -possibly Edzna when we return.

My first cruise was also on the Norway -- I'm sure if you are like me, it will be the first of many. I really didn't like Jamaica. The Falls were interesting, but not as great as I would have hoped. Stay on the ship. I went to Tulum -- very interesting and beautiful, though very hot! It is a long ride, so take that into consideration. Cozumel is an iteresting place -- I enjoyed just walking around. Don't try walking around in Jamaica -- scary!!! Enjoy your first cruise!!

Eileen , do you know anything about the dolphin excursion at Chankanaab National Park? I have always wanted to swim with the dolphins.
