I heard it also - on the 6 o'clock news EST. It's the Tropicale. Apparently there was a fire on board and they were drifting, also a hurricane or tropical storm was approaching. Will have to listen to the 11 pm news.

Got it!
Carnival's Tropicale lost power late yesterday after a fire in the engine room. It is drifting,100 miles off the Florida coast. There are 1700 people on board. They had to air lift a passenger with a heart condition this morning. They are waiting for the tug boat to tow them in. They are in a hurry because tropical storm Harvey is bearing down on them.

From tonight's Cruise News:

A fire broke out on board Carnival's Tropicale Sunday evening leaving the 36,674 ton cruise ship and 1,096 passengers adrift in the Gulf of Mexico. The fire was first reported at 6:15 PM and was confined to the engine-room area. While the blaze was extinguished quickly, it did enough damage to force the shut down of the ship's engines. Early today, the crew was able to re-start the starboard engine for a while and began heading slowly towards Tampa.

After consulting with the National Hurricane Center about the track of hurricane Harvey, a decision was made to change direction and actually head away from Tampa in a big loop towards the West until the ship could rendezvous with an ocean-going tug boat. According to Tim Gallagher a spokesman for carnival, "Basically we are going to do a big loop in the Gulf and turn around, with a very safe distance between us and Harvey, and follow the storm back in to Tampa". The ship is currently awaiting the arrival of the Beverly Anderson, an ocean-going tug boat which was expected to stand by and help tow the ship the remaining 100 miles to Tampa if necessary. The Tropicale is expected to reach Tampa late Tuesday afternoon.

Thanks Joe!
That was a lot more information than our local news station gave us (King 5 News,Seattle Wa.) The other stations didn't even mention it.

Just heard from some of the passengers on Carnival's Tropical on a.m. television news.
Sounds like the crew really DROPPED the ball!
Passengers are saying that many of the crew were not only unhelpful, but were downright
nasty to the passengers. Hard to believe, but people I saw seemed very credible. Real bad PR for Carnival. Not one of my personal favorites, but sorry to hear this.

Well let me ask you, I have never been on a cruise before and I am scheduled aboard the Tropical set to depart with my girlfriend on 10/4/99. I am more than a little skeptical for obvious reasons. This is our 1-year anniversary& I don't want anything to go wrong. Any ideas?? Everyone I have spoken to says don't worry, but they are not the ones going.
