We are going to make a stop in Cozumel on our cruise in January. We are looking for a good size beach so we can sit on the beach and sun and do a litlle snorkeling. The last time we went to the national park and the water was beautiful, but the beach was the size of a postage stamp.
Anyone have any ideas.

We were there in January '98 and had a late lunch in a great resturant about 1 mile between the pier and town.
Across the street from the resturant along the shoreline were miles of beach. Many beach vendors and people there were having a blast !

There is a beach in Cozumel pronounced (Chunk-a-nob) which was great for snorkeling, although the beach was nicely combed, parts of the beach are a bit rocky.

MR. BARRYBOAT, is right
CHAUKANAAB BEACH is the place.
My husband and I were there twice
in the late 80's and early 90's.
you did'nt have to swim to far
to see a cannon below the surface.
The water is clear and clean. They
take good care of the park. My husband even fed a fish bread there. It was just a beautiful
place to go. We hope you get a chance to experience it.

Having done Chakanaab a few times we went looking for another beach. The crew recommended San Francisco Beach. It was about 15 minutes longer cab ride to the beach club. All the ammenities were available, and on a natural beach rather than a government made one. Restaurant/Bar under cover on the beach. Lockers available. Huts for shelter, or just rent chairs, or sit on your towel. Small reef just off shore available for snorkel by boat ($10pp), if you have a group you can all arrange a boat to Palancar Reef for $50. We had a wonderful day, repeated it the following year, and will do it again...don't tell anyone else..it wasn't full of cruisers!!!!lol

I'll be in that area about the same time on the Enchantment of the Seas. I was planning on going to Xel Ha. I was there in 1989 and it was beautiful. It was a short stop on a tour to Tulum and I've always wanted to go back. Has anyone done both parks and can offer a comparison?

We went to San Francisco Beach last time we were in Cozumel and it was awful! The beach chairs were old wooden ones that had flaking paint and splinters. The bathroom facilities were scary and the "shower" smelled like it pumped its water straight from the toilet!! The beach itself was gorgeous and the water was incredible, but unless they've improved it in the past 4 years, I'd think twice before choosing it over other beaches in Cozumel.

Don't bother even getting off the ship in Cozumel unless your are going on the snorkling excursion. Cozumel felt a little like jamaica, I had to always watch over my shoulder for fear I was going to be dragged down an alley. The people in Cozumel were very pushy and I, along with my family felt very uncomfortable while there. It is a very poor and run-down area that doesn't offer much besides jewelry stores.

mifox79, when were you in Cozumel? We were there three years ago and didn't feel intimidated at all. Granted the people are poor but we found them to be very friendly and helpful and of course ready to haggle about any price of any goods for sale, but never pushy like we found the Jamaicans. We are planning to go back soon and we were looking forward to spending the day in Cozumel and would like to know if anybody has had the same experience as mifox79.

It's funny how different people's opinions can be. Cozumel was our favorite port on our Western Caribbean cruise. In fact, we loved it so much we went back later to stay a week in a condo. So please do get off the ship, you may find you like it too. Maybe not, but at least you'll know.

We have been to Cozumel twice, the last time in Jan.99.Neither time did we feel uncomfortable nor did we find the people pushy.
We agree with the previous post about San Francisco Beach. We drove in expecting to stay awhile..BUT..had a drink (expensive),looked around and left because of how run-down and dirty it was.Lots of other pretty places to see in Cozumel!

Willy: My wife and I enjoyed Cozumel very much (2/99 HAL/Veendam). We did take a snorkel excursion in the morning (sorry can't remember the name of the beach) followed by lunch and shopping in town. Yes, some local shop owners and vendors hover along the sidewalks, in front of their shops, but they are all friendly. We spoke "some" Spanish with them and politely said no if we were not interested in their wares. They never pushed back. If I may pass a tip along, we had a great lunch at Pancho's Backyard - - nice atmosphere too. For a cocktail or cold drink (and cool T-Shirts) try Carlos & Charlies - - both on the main street in town. Enjoy!

A wonderful restaurant in Cozumel is "Lobster's Cove", which is located in between the pier and the shopping area. There are many tourists there, service and food were great, and you can walk right out to the water and feed the fish or snorkel. Beautiful!

Sorry, I meant to say in my last post that there are "not" many tourists at Lobster's Cove. I did not see anyone from my cruise ship and it was nice to have an extremely good, quiet lunch with a beautiful view.
