We're {40s}taking our parents{70s}on an alaska cruise...our first cruise.
So many questions. Does the Rhapsody have to use launches in the ports? How do they decide you gets off first? I read where someone said that if you got a certain color pass (purple maybe?) that it could take 3 hrs to get off?
Please say it ain't so! How long before the cruise do you get your packet from the cruise line? And is it really true they don't have
irons onboard for your use. And what's with all the complaints about the food, you people are making me nervous!!! I really enjoy good food! Thanks for taking the time to read all this, Hope to hear from y'all real soon!
(hey this is my first time in a discusion group too...I'll try to be more brief in the future)

I have never sailed to Alaska but I did sail on the Rhapsody, less than 2 months ago. It is a beautiful ship that you're really going to enjoy. Now to answer your questions. Tendering to a port depends on the port. It may have a pier, in which case it will be used if it's available. If no pier or if the pier doesn't have sufficient space for another ship, you use tenders to get to shore. Who gets off first depends on factors like shore excursions. Early risers can easily get off first. Shore excursion people who have early beginning times are off early too. They will announce when you can get a pass to board a tender. You get there first and you're off early. Get there last and you may not need a pass by the time they get to you. In either case, it's not that long. I received my cruise packet about one week prior to leaving. Why would you want to iron when the ship's laundry will press your clothes for a couple dollars? Don't dwell on this. Clothes pressing will costs you less than 1/10th of 1% of the cost of this cruise. The food on this ship is excellent. The duck was fabulous and our waiter offered up 2 lobster tails when taking our order. Food in the Windjammer cafe is every bit as good as the dining room. Don't hesitate to eat there if you're in a hurry. You made a good choice with this cruise line and ship. Don't worry about anything. The crew will bend over backwards to help you out. Enjoy!

Thanks for putting so many of my fears to rest. One more question. The four of us are
sharing a veranda cabin...will we still be speaking after a week?!!

As with most ships the cabins are not overly large. We did not have a veranda but our friends did. Their cabin was about the same size as our outside, I category, cabin, except it had a veranda. I think it will be a little crowded so everyone will have to be patient with each other. The most difficult times will be when you get up and start showering, everyone will be tripping over each other, and again when you go to bed. I would recommend using that veranda to the ultimate and have a two wait there while the other two are getting ready.
