Mom, 82 years old,has been many places, including to Africa on safari 2 years ago. Having recently cruised, I know she would love it! She is concerned about mobility (she isn't confined to a wheelchair, but can only walk short distances). She is also diabetic and thinks a special diet would defeat much of the purpose of a cruise. Any suggestions on great ports of call, ships, lines, for her special needs? Thanks!

Hi Sara,
It's great to hear how your mother is going on. All respect !
Well, I have some suggestions for you which could be interesting.
The first ship I'd like to inform you about is MS ASTOR, a modern ship, build in 1987, which is only 21000 tons big and offers a very warm, elegant and classic surrounding. Cabins are spacious and very well equipped and there are no long distances to walk since almost all the public lounges are located on one deck. The ship is known for having one of the nicest dining rooms afloat and a great kitchen which is very attentive in diabetic food. Be sure, the great ambiance in this dining room will let forget your mother that she'll have only diabetic food. The service is very friendly and well performed.
I'd really say that MS ASTOR is one of the nicest cruise ships in the world (rated with ****+ by Berlitz) but it's not at all expensive. The ship is cruising all over the world and I'm sure that there's the one or other itinerary which your mother would love to cruise. MS ASTOR is owned by the Russian company Sovcomflot in Moscow which is the leading cruise company in Russia. Staff and officers are from Russia and Ukrainia and, believe me, they know their job ! The ship is operated under full charter by the German company Transocean Tours in Bremen so the ship is having their logo on the funnel now. As I know they are offering this ship on the US market as well. The onboard language by the way is German and English as well, money is German Mark and US Dollar. I'll check out for you if I can get a US contact address for Transocean Tours.

The second ship I'd recommend belongs to the same Russian cruiseline, it's TS MAXIM GORKIY. This ship is having the most spacious standard cabins and bathrooms which you can find on a first-class-ship. It was build in 1969 in Germany and is still the most liked and most famous cruise ship here in Europe. It already got plenty awards. Like MS ASTOR, this ship is not too big, it has 25000 tons and is very elegant and familiar (rated with **** by Berlitz). There are no long distances to walk here either, and the corridors, located on the middle of the ship, are very wide. The ship has three restaurants offering the same food-quality and service like MS ASTOR. The interior design is classic, as well as the outside shape of the ship. This is what I'd call a real ship. You can easily recognize it by its platform topped funnel which is aboslutely unique. Because it's a turbine ship, you won't hear any noise from the engines and the ship stays very stable in the water because it has a draft of 8.25 meters=27.0 ft.
The service is very attentive and friendly.
Also TS MAXIM GORKIY is cruising all around the world and offers plenty itineraries and combination possibilities, and for a very fair price. The ship is under full charter for the German company Phoenix Cruises, Bonn. I know, that there are US passengers as well onboard sometimes and I'll contact Phoenix to get a American contact agent for you.
Both ships by the way have very nice indoor swimming pools which are just perfect while cruising in a colder area like Scandinavia or Alaska for example.
I could write pages about these two ships because they are my favorite ones but I think it would get too long here.
I hope, this information can already help you further but don't hesitate to contact me here in case you have further questions.
It will be a pleasure for me to tell you all I know about those ships.

I am a diabetic too; The American
Diabetes Association contracts with a
travel agency for cruises just for diabetics-
which could mean group rates. You might
want to contact your local American
Diabetes Association chapter or their
national headquarters for more information.
The American Diabetes Association also
has a website- I can't find the address
for it, but you can find it through your
search engine. It is my understanding
that the groups that go have a wonderful
time- the last time I checked was a
Caribbean cruise out of Miami. I'm sure
the destinations vary. I don't think your
mother has to worry about food- there is
so much of it that she can pick and choose what she wants. Most of the
individual cruise lines, especially the
major ones-- Carnival, Holland America,
Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Norwegian
Cruise Lines, Princess Lines, and others
have their own websites that you can
find through your search engines. Many
of their websites display sample menus so
you and your mother can get a good idea
of what is offered. Being a diabetic too,
I have had no problems with diet and
exercise on the five cruises I've been on
so far. Oh-- Princess does not have a web-
site yet, but the other lines do.
Hope this helps!
Sincerely, Janice

Sorry, I checked with Phoenix Cruises but they have no agent in the USA where Maxim Gorkiy could be booked through. The cruises can only be booked in Germany.
