It is quite surprising that Cunard make so little of their historic Titanic connection. After all: 1) Cunard took over the White Star line who owned the Titanic. 2) The QE2 is the ONLY remaining transatlantic liner to still regularly undertake the Southampton to New York run, as did the ill fated Titanic. 3) During her Transatlantic run to NY, the QE2 regularly sails quite near to the position where the Tinatic was lost.

To the layman it would seem that Cunard have missed an obvious marketing opportunity. I’m not aware that Cunard have offered a Titanic theme cruise? Maybe Cunard just don’t need the custom? Maybe my ideas do not not fit in with their image. Any comments?

Malcolm

I can't imagine that Cunard would want to emphasize their relationship to a disaster. In this case, "there's no such thing as bad publicity" doesn't hold true - they've had their share of bad press over the last year or two already! I've sailed on the QE2 several times (before and after the refit) and this is a ship stuck in the past and surviving on the remnants of prestige and history. Many passengers get the feeling that they're sailing on a doomed ship (age, mindset, furnishings, food/beverage) anyway.

I agree and disagree with all of the above: we saw "Titanic" on board this winter long before it hit the video stores and the ship has done Titanic themed cruises including one this year with one of the remaining survivors. Cunard was a rival to the White Star line in 1912 but did not merge with it until 1934, long after the disaster.
As to the last post, there's them that love her and them that don't. I love her. There's no ship that's classier, the food is amongst the best in the world, the service has always been flawless, the crew committed to safety and good seamanship and the ports visited varied and interesting. I'm at the point where nothing else seems to measure up.

I have to totally disagree with your comments on the QE2 Vicki. We have sailed on her three times and have never heard anyone make the remarks that you speak of. As a matter of fact most of the passengers have sailed on her many times and would not sail on any other ship. The QE2 is often sailing fully booked and this does not happen if people are dissatisfied with the ship. I cannot fault her in any way. She has an ambience all her own. We are just about to book our next cruise on the QE2 - even our 21 year old daughter loves travelling on her.

I totally disagree with you Vickie, QE2 has beautiful interiors, and a beautiful exterior, with passengers going on her for many reasons. I am 16 and I love to travel on her, and I never get bored on QE2.

Elizabeth - I agree with you!!!!

Vickie - Having spoken with many people about the QE2 I've never heard such negative commments. Almost without exception they all wanted to sail her again. She's a high priority on my wish list.

Do you have a favourite Line and/or ship?

I understand that the Titanic film generated lots of positive interest in Cruising, rather than negative! I'm told that it helped boost bookings for many cruise lines.

The QE2 does not always sail full..I've seen the discounted fares!

I do not like her 1960 ish interiors much, but these are being slowly replaced. However, few passengers have a bad word to say about the service and overall experience.

Hi...we were on her several years ago and weren't impressed at all. Found the food and service mediocre. Certainly wouldn't bother going on her again even at 2 for 1 fares....peter

Hi Cunard, I get the impression that you are a Cunard fan?

I started this post in 1998. However it's now 2000, and I now notice that Cunard's latest brouchures adverts and excellent web site make a lotmore play on the Cunard 'heritage'. Maybe Carnival have suggested that Cunard should reinforce their image/brand? Take a look for yourself:

When I cruised on QE-2 "as a passenger" back in 1988, I noticed that the service in the dinning room was not that wonderful. I even made comments regarding this to Cunard. I think when Cunard openned up the ship to include an "International" crew, there was a drop in the "British" consistency that was very noticeable. In a way, I'm glad that they did this because then I (an American) had the opportunity to work on QE-2. However, I think QE-2 lost something when she was openned up to an International crew. The officers are still British of course, but in the dinning room, and in other areas throughout the ship, QE-2 is like a United Nations, (just like any other cruise ship these days). I recall, when I was a passenger, the morning menu stated that I could have my eggs any way I like them, so I asked for Eggs Benedict, which is my favorite. The waiter didn't know what eggs Benedict was, so the head waiter finally came to ask me himself what my request was, and he wasn't sure either. Finally the Matre d' came and told me that they couldn't make the Hollandaise sauce that goes on top of Eggs Benedict. I thought seemed to remember reading that in the days of the Queen Mary, the galley could usually produce any dish that a passenger requested. One time a guy from Texas ordered a rattlesnake meat soup. The Galley was a little short on rattle snakes that crossing, so they brought out their best soup, and had the waiters stand around the man shaking baby rattles. In a sense the Texan got his rattlesnake soup. I also noticed that the service in the dinning room was very slow. Then again, I was in the Mauretania Restuarant. Eggs benedict is so simple to make, you would think they would be able to accomodate me. Things amy have changed since then. I did notice while I was working on QE-2 in 1992 that the level of service may have went up a bit, but there was still a long way to go, I felt, before the level of service aboard QE-2 was what it should be. Now, I'm sure that the level of service increases a quantum leap when you are traveling in first class.
