I am looking to hire a cruise ship for a corporate event next April/May. It may be that all we need is the ship and it doesn't need to actually sail (pity really) but on the other hand subject to cost it may. I do not know where to start (apart from here) can anyone give me some advice. (Ship preferably in Southampton area)

Ps are there any moored ships temporily out of use?

thanks

Welcome aboard John. Wow, a big question.

Cruise ships tend to be booked/chartered more than a year in advance. Most of the ships opperating from British ports do not start thier cruises from the UK, maybe a little later than you require? They spend winter in the Med. or Caribbean.
To obvious cruise lines are P&O and Cunard (Southampton) and Fred.Olsen Dover (Dover) for starters. There are Travel Agents that specialise in this type of thing.

I must ask, why a cruise ship? Bear in mind that it is likely to be VERY expensive? How many delegates will you have?

John:

There are a number of places to start:

a) you can contact a travel agent w/ experience in event planning and charter/ incentive groups

b) you can contact an incentive house who do these sorts of functions

c) you can contact the cruise line directly as they all have charter and incentive divisions. Unless you have an in-house event planner that can handle all the details for you I would recommend that you get a third party involved to assist - it will cost more as they will charge a commission - but it will save you a lot of headaches.

Some other considerations:
a) capacity - w/ ships ranging from 100 pax to upwards of 3300 - how many people are you looking for.

b) inclusions - some ships are completely all inclusive while others will charge for gratutities, drinks etc. make sure you understand the cost implications of trying to save a bit up front versus having it all included right from the start.

c) if you charter a ship you have a greater opportunity to customize ALL aspects of the voyage from signage to itinerary to menus etc.

These are just a few quick ideas and I am sure that many others here will have some insight.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi John

All good advice above, but just a little snippet I heard recently, P&O's Arcadia was on one of those junkets end of June, and I heard that P&O got £1,000,000.00 per day, which is mega bucks, and its no wonder a company like P&O are doing more and more of these events, you just need to look at their brochures and find the gaps and see how often it is happening now.

Cheers
M.

Malcolm,
teh Carnival Destiny class vessels can carry almost 3500 pax (w(upper bunks)!
As for GDP1-million for one day?? that is what the cruise line exec. dreams are made off!!!
Take the OCEAN GLORY I in Dover, she most likely cost us$50.000 per day all inclusive!
In order to give a good advise, we need to know more:
how many days, how many people, what is really is your budget?? Very important, time of year. Whereas beg. of April may be a good month to charter a vessel, end of the month and may not so, as many of the greek ships for example who spend the winter in piraeus/perama, start their cruise schedules then. As Malcolm mentioned, most charters, itineraries are indeed planned a year ahead. Most cruise lines have already printed and send out the brochures for the winter/spring season, so you are running against the clock here really.
As for a broker?? Obviously they will charge for their services, but many have also exclusive contracts with a certain shipowner and if you do approach the owner he is likely to pass you on to his "hosue broker".
Now, why don't you give us here all the pertinemt information, as detailed as possible and we all shall see what we can come up with for you. You may have to invite us onboard fo the event....

John Freeman,

Actually I have experience with chartering a cruise vessel. What the cruise line will want is a letter of credit for the cruise of what ever amount the ship is worth for the week regarding average revenue. Depends on the size of the group you will have and how many days your event is. With full ship charter you can custom design your itinerary to go where ever you want to go.

You may want to consider a partial ship charter which is less expensive, but you wouldn't be able to alter the itinerary.

Let me know if I can help you.

As John is from London, I was thinking of some of P&O's UK fleet.

Take the OCEAN GLORY I in Dover, she most likely cost us$50.000 per day all inclusive!

Unfortunately they will not allow people on her until she id declared safe!

I was on one of these shipboard conferences a few weeks ago, aboard P&O's Aurora. The conference was as dull as dishwater -- the main reason I went was to see the ship!
We sailed from Southampton down to Guernsey and anchored about a mile off shore. So frustrating, to be able to see land but be too far away to even get a decent signal on the cellphone!
As a conference venue, it was excellent. And with almost all the entertainment put on hold for the three days, everyone was focussed on the talking. Which was a shame, because (apart from an excellent show by British comedian Mick Miller) there was nothing else to do. "You're here to talk to each other, not to have fun!"
The most hilarious part was in the disco. A small group of shippies, being ogled by about 300 pot-bellied bald-headed delegates!
Anyway John, I can put you in touch with the organising company if you wish.
