German cruise operator AIDA Cruises announced today that is suspending port calls in Israel for two months following an incident where shrapnel from an apparently intercepted rocket landed on the deck of AIDAdiva. The incident occured Monday evening as the 825 ft. cruise ship with more than 2,500 passengers aboard was departing from the Israel port of Ashdod.
In a statement released by AIDA, which is part of Miami-based Carnival Corp,. the company said that there were no injuries or damage to the ship and that all 2,700 guests and crew members of AIDAdiva were doing well.
"We are very sorry that the guests of AIDAdiva were witnesses to this incident," said Hansjorg Kunze, vice president of communications & sustainability for the cruise line. "We assure all our guests that for AIDA Cruises safety of guests and crew is our top priority at all times."
The small pieces of shrapnel were discovered on the upper passenger decks of the ship as it was departing Ashdod and were examined and determined to pose no danger to passengers or crew. Passengers were informed of the incident and the ship continued to its next schedule port of call.
Ships that had been scheduled to visit Ashdod will instead call at Santorini, Greece, the line said in a statement.
