As of November 2014 Venice is banning cruise ships over 96,000 GT with 3,000 or more passengers from entering the lagoon. They are also ordering a reduction in cruise ships in front of St. Mark's and in time plan to create a new channel to totally remove the cruise ships from the main canal.

I find this good. Venice will not be getting much attention anymore and that attention might move onto Dubrovnik or Trieste. I am cheering for Dubrovnik since I am from Croatia. They will still have traffic since there are a lot of ships under 95 000 tons.

Good for the environment and also for sanity trying to walk around when the cruise ship hordes besieged St. Mark's but horrible for the tourist economy and especially the t-shirt stores. Sales of cheap trinkets and t-shirts will be off dramatically .....

With all the financial problems that Italy is suffering to add to their unemployment numbers will not help the country.

Less cruise ship visits will lead to many people making a living through working in any job connected with the visiting cruise ships becoming unemployed.

Admitted it will help to preserve the fabric of some buildings in Venice but to see more people unemployed in Italy is not a good idea.

i thought venice was only banning extra large cruise vessels (a good idea) from the main canal that passes san marco square and redirect them to the shipping canal south of venice that heads to mestre shipyards, from there they could head to the cruise docks...or am i wrong?

All ships under 95,000 tons are allowed but only 5 in one day. All ships above that tonnage will not be able to sail in Venice.

Does anyone really think that the cruise lines will not find a way to bring passengers to Venice without being able to dock there? Venice is such an attraction - indeed, it now has no purpose other than as a tourist destination. I wonder whetherwe're more likely to find a relatively small impact on the local economy but a great improvement for conservation.

Does anyone know the geography and if there is another significant port within a short drive? Marghera is not far and that is where one of the big shipyards/industrial areas is located. Monfalcone and Trieste are not too far either but maybe a bit much for a tour bus drive.

Right now Venice is saying they will use an alternate canal for the ships to come and go but if they make it too difficult I would bet on one of the alternate ports.

Edinburgh is a good example. The one dock in Leith required the use of the lock and that was always problematic and now totally out because of the size of the ships. Princess had used some alternates but still always had problems with the winds, etc. so the ships are mostly going across Forth and busing the passengers into Edinburgh.

I've sailed out of Marghera - not exactly picturesque you can read my then comments and view the sights in my old CT album from 2004.

We checked in at the main Venice terminal and were bussed over. There was also a small dock alongside for passenger ferries.

Venice on foot or by vaporetto is not the same as seeing it from above sailing through the lagoon. IMHO there's no point in visiting by ship if you can't do that. The place is just too busy during the day when the ships are there to see anything. 2 years ago we took the vaporetto to St Mark's, pushed through crowds for 10 minutes squeezed between stalls and then retreated back to the next vaporetto out! However this year in June the campanile was closed. There weren't any stalls at all along the canal - one could walk and see the sights.
